World War II reached nearly every corner of the globe, from the deserts of Africa, to the tundras of Russia. When Japan pulls a sneaky attack against America by bombing Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, it leaves no choice for the Americans but to fight against Japan and make sure they don’t hurt anyone again. You will learn how the bombing of Pearl Harbor affected frontline soldiers, women at home, and national leaders. Read about the tactics Japan used in executing their plan and what the United States did in return. You’ll even find out what aircraft and deep-sea vessels Japan used to bring maximum destruction. Equipped with a timeline, facts, and backstories of military personnel and national leaders, this book will be all you need to discover all there is about the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
This book is a nonfiction history book, detailing the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The story is told in third person point of view by the author, Sue Bradford Edwards. The main people who come up in this book are President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mitsuo Fuchida, Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, General George Marshall, Lieutenant General Walter Campbell Short, and Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. The story took place in Pearl Harbor. The actual bombing, which came in two waves, happened on December 7, 1941. The main topics in the book are about how Japan tried to take over East Asia, Japan’s plan to attack the United States, the limited intelligence that the U.S. had about this plan, the first and second waves of attack, and the aftermath of the bombing. The reason why the author wrote this story is plainly just to inform the reader about an important event in the history of the United States, an event that led to the U.S. fighting in World War II.
I liked this book and found it to be very interesting. I had already known the simple facts about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but this book gave me many new facts that I had never even known about. One thing I like about the book is how it not only talks about the bombing, but also expands your knowledge by going into detail about the weaponry and industrial vehicles that Japan used. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read history books, and I’m sure this book will be enough for anyone who loves to read about war as well!

Blood, slaughter, and death. The words that come into your mind when you would think about the vast Mongolian Empire and its power-craving ruler, Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan was not an ordinary man. Growing up in violence, he taught himself to kill and run. After becoming tired of his fellow Mongolians fighting with each other, Genghis Khan said to himself, “enough.” He united the nomadic tribes of Mongolia and created one of the most powerful armies known to man. Genghis Khan conquered huge chunks of Central Asia and China, expanding his empire to a great feat. At the peak of his reign, his empire stretched beyond 12 million square acres of land throughout the world. To achieve this feat, the Mongols slaughtered and killed everyone in their path. They marched into cities, with flame in their eyes and swords in their hands. This left a bad reputation among Genghis Khan and his empire. Throughout all this killing, though, the Mongolians contributed to the growth and maturity of Asian territories. The world changed from the medieval to the modern era because of the Mongols according to the author! Jack Weatherford wrote, "The new technology, knowledge, and commercial wealth created the Renaissance in which Asia rediscovered some of its prior culture, but more importantly, absorbed the technology for printing, firearms, the compass, and the abacus from the Mongols." Basically, they contributed to part of the world by killing people. I thought that was odd too when I read it!

“Genghis Khan and the Making of the Natural World’ by Jack Weatherford is told in third person point of view. It’s a history book which takes place in the 12th century Mongolian empire. This book outlines the reign of the Mongolians and their influence on surrounding nations. Some notable people in this book are Genghis Khan, his son Ogedei Khan, and his numerous grandsons. Genghis Khan was somewhat kind, but was also a dominant ruler. He killed numerous times, as I mentioned before, but he treated the people of his empire in a delightful way. For example, he imposed fewer taxes and allowed the freedom of religion among his empire. He created various educational programs and schools to tutor his soldiers and the young Mongolians. When he died in 1227, his son Ogedei Khan took over the throne. Ogedei Khan expanded the empire, but one thing he also did was have a lot of children. This was a very controversial matter, for who would take the throne after his death was uncertain. The eldest son wouldn’t take over like the other empires at the time. So, when his death finally came in 1241, only 14 years after his father’s death, the empire was split into various parts. Each part was ruled by one of Ogedei Khan’s seven children. This didn’t end very well, as the Mongolian economy collapsed. All the territories taken over returned to their original state. Mongolia also returned to its original size, which wasn’t very big, unfortunately. The author’s purpose for writing this book was to inform. I was very fascinated by every page I read, so he did a good job!

Overall, I found “Genghis Khan and the Modern World” very intriguing. One aspect I enjoyed was the author’s use of adjectives to describe a certain subject. For example, the author was describing Genghis Khan after his victory in reuniting the various tribes in Mongolia. He stated, “A man of tall stature, of vigorous build, robust in body, the hair on his face scanty and turned white, with cats' eyes, possessed of dedicated energy, discernment, genius, and understanding, awe-striking, a butcher, just, resolute, an overthrower of enemies, intrepid, sanguinary, and cruel." Descriptions like this one gave me a vivid picture of Genghis Khan in my mind. Jack Weatherford also included tables, such as of the Khan family, which I thought was very convenient. These attributes sharpened my understanding of the Mongolian rule! I would recommend this book to individuals who have appreciation toward combat and death. If you love video games like Call of Duty or Halo, you will certainly love this book! I found taking the trip down the Mongolian history lane fascinating, and I’m sure many readers will too!

Without women, many of the valuable discoveries made would not have been available today. Although we may have forgotten what all these women have done in history, they have really proved to make a difference. From the development of a wartime device to an ultra-strong fiber, this book gives the details of how many different historical women developed their products, the time it took, and the struggles they all faced. Some women were even taunted about how they could never possibly invent or even discover something.  Others were amazed at the amount of money they would be making from their innovations. However, their gains in wealth did not come easily. These astounding women had to go through many events in the past in order to sell their products and discoveries. This book, overall, gives the details in history of the development of these note-worthy inventions. Many women, like Madam C.J. Walker, for example, overcame her childhood poverty as one of the wealthiest women in America.

Even though all the women in “Women Inventors & Their Discoveries” were ones to remember, the story of how Madam C.J. Walker’s discovery came about stuck with me. Since this is a series of events in history, this book would be considered a non-fiction book.  This section of the story, as well as the whole story is told in third-person point of view. Although I’m focusing on Madam C.J. Walker, the other people mentioned in this book about their discoveries are Elizabeth Lucas Pinckney, Martha Coston, Fannie Farmer, Josephine Baker, Barbara McClintock, Bette Graham, Grace Hopper, Ruth Handler, and Stephanie Kwolek. The story of Walker’s discovery begins in the early 1900’s in St. Louis. In this book, she discovers the “The Great Wonderful Hair Grower” since many women during that time were going bald since they washed their hair so infrequently.  Overall, the main purpose of this book is to inform many people about who discovered these effective products and its long process, which was worth it for not only these women, but the whole world.

The book “Women Inventors & Their Discoveries” was a generally eye opening book to read. Learning about times in history when innovative products were invented by remarkable women was something to remember, and I’ll take with me as inspiration throughout my life. I was also informed about all the struggles of developing a product, which makes me even more grateful for the women who invented them. I would honestly recommend this book to anyone who thinks women aren’t worthy of improving society and the world in general. This book really shows the hard work and dedication of each woman while making these products. There was no section of the book that didn’t catch my eye. All in all, if you like reading about all the events and steps taken when developing a product- and just history in general- then this book is for you.

Remembering Firebase Ripcord by Christopher J. Brady is about Firebase Ripcord. Firebase Ripcord is a war between North Vietnam and the United States. In the book, it describes the events that occurred during the war. The book contains descriptions of some of the veterans and quotes from the veterans of the war.  The book starts off with the landing of planes, preparing for the war to start. The soldiers were setting up base and they were getting ready to fight. The book then starts describing the scenes of the war and stories about the start of the war. The book continues all the way through the end of the war. Describing ever event that occurred with very vivid descriptions. The descriptions give insight on what the war looked like and how the soldiers felt.

The genre of “Remembering Firebase Ripcord” by Christopher J. Brady is non-fiction history. The point of view of the book is 3rd person. The author of the book was never in the war, but in the book, it includes stories and quotes from veterans of the war. The people in the book are veterans of the war. The book included the stories and quotes from veterans. The setting of the book was Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam. This was the location of where the war, Firebase Ripcord. Supporting details were the stories the men told about the war. Also, the quotes from the veterans are supporting details.  In “Remembering Firebase Ripcord” it states “James “Tiny” Aanonsen was a machine gunner in Alpha Four, a towering figure from Staten Island, N.Y.” The book included many descriptions about some of the veterans in the war. The book also included quotes from many of the veterans. For example, it tells what James Aanonsen said “I was an M-60 machine gunner. They told us we were going to land on top of Ripcord so we could secure it. We were going to set up a firebase.” These quotes were also stories about being frontline in the war. The authors purpose of the book was to inform the readers about a War in history. The book included facts, quotes and stories to inform us about the war and its importance.

In my opinion, the book was very good. It was very informative about the topic, which was the Firebase Ripcord. I enjoyed hearing the stories from veterans that lived through the war. I also loved the direct quotes from the veterans. The author wrote about the topic in a such informative way and I could imagine the setting, actions and events that were occurring. I would recommend this book, “Remembering Firebase Ripcord” written by Christopher J. Brady, to anyone who enjoys reading about war life and the history of war.

In the book, Atlanta 1864, Sherman Marches South, the author James Donnell explains the Atlanta campaign.  He speaks of the Union forces and confederate counterparts. This book contains photographs of many war scenes and generals involved.  The book is organized in a particular sequence that enables you to experience the battles spoken of.
Atlanta 1864 Sherman Marches South is placed under the genre of Historical Non Fiction.  The story is spoken in the words of James Donnell.  Ever since elementary school, Donnell has been fascinated with the Civil War.  The main person the story speaks of was named Major General William T. Sherman.  This book takes the reader from the borders of Georgia and Tennessee to Atlanta during the year of 1864.  This march propelled President Abraham Lincoln to reelection two months later.   The capture of the South was the end of a viciously fought campaign, which caused happiness throughout the North. The Author's purpose was to inform readers about the struggles the South faced. He continues educating the reader about the battles fought which would decide the fate of Atlanta.  Donnell studied the Civil War history and Strategies for twenty-five years.
The book, Atlanta 1864 Sherman Marches South was an interesting and informative read.  This is a great book for readers who enjoy learning and discovering wars of the past. I personally did not enjoy reading this book. Because of my lack of prior knowledge about this topic, I was bored and uninterested. If you love learning about Historical battles, then this book is for you.

English settlers created a colony at Jamestown. However, a lot of people went and most died from hunger and diseases. They never achieved their original goal of finding gold. However, they did pave the way for future, more successful, settlements. The story talks about how in May, the first English colony was established in Jamestown.

The genre is history. The point of view is told in third point of view. Some people in the story are John Smith, Edward Wingfield, George Kendall, John Martin, Thomas Mallard, Thomas Dowse, and many more. Some of the story takes in place in Virginia and some takes place on the sea voyage to Virginia. The supporting details are: they were looking for gold and were unsuccessful; there were many diseases and cannibalism: Native Americans used to live in Virginia. The author informs you on how Jamestown was found and what happened on it.

I would recommend this book if someone enjoys history. If you don’t like history this probably isn’t the best book for you. If you like how Virginia came to be and are into American history this book is good for you. This book shows how Jamestown was when the English colony found Jamestown.

"Terrible Typhoid Mary" is a book about the typhoid outbreak that began in the early 1900's, and what a cook named Mary Mallon had to do with it. The Warren family needed a cook, so they hired the Irish immigrant Mary Mallon for the job. Everything was going well, and the family loved Mary's cooking. Not soon after Mary's arrival, though, many people living in the household came down with typhoid fever. After this, the family moved and Mary Mallon was gone from their lives. Yet, a man had believed, without any scientific evidence, that Mary Mallon was a healthy typhoid carrier. This is what triggered doctors, officials, and the government getting involved and doing whatever means necessary to figure out what Mary Mallon had to do with people being ill and dying of typhoid. Her 'captors' are the reason she is known today as "Typhoid Mary."
This is a history book. It is in third person point of view because the author wasn't part of the story. People who were part of the story, though, include Mary Mallon, the Warren's, George Soper, Sara Josephine Baker, Hermann Biggs, August Breihof, and others including doctors, police, people Mary worked for, and her friends. All of this takes place in multiple places scattered around New York. These areas include Manhattan, Long Island, Brooklyn, and North Brother Island. The author is writing about the true story of Mary Mallon, and what others did to get involved in her life. Mallon baffled people, and they might of even been scared by the fact that she 'innocently and unintentionally killed many people.' The author is trying to inform the reader in an entertaining way about a true historical event that changed and impacted our country, particularly New York.
I enjoyed reading "Terrible Typhoid Mary." The topic is very interesting, a woman who was completely healthy but carries an infectious bacterial fever. Also, the author wrote in a manner that made the story very interesting. Bartoletti wrote in a novel-like way, the book wasn't just fact on top of boring fact. All the facts and even statistics transitioned well with the next. There was great detail in every paragraph, and showed both sides of the story when it involved the topic of taking Mary into custody. Due to the supporting details and authors style of writing, I thought that this was a very good and truly interesting book. It is funny to see what people will do for money and fame, no matter what it may do to another.  For people who like an event in history that is an intriguing story and subject, along with a book that doesn't bore you due to its great voice and detail, "Terrible Typhoid Mary" is the book for you. Also, if you’re willing to try something new, this book would be a great start.

"Hiroshima" is a book by John Hersey that gives six firsthand stories of the bomb experience that Japan went through at the end of World War II.  The United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th, 1945.  The author presents this information over the course of 5 stages of the bombing; when the bomb hit, the fires after, the investigations, the "panic grass and feverfew", and the aftermath. This book shares the feelings, emotions, and fear that the survivors felt when the bomb struck.  I researched the book and found that the reason for two copyright dates was actually because the last chapter was added nearly 40 years later when the six subjects mentioned throughout the book interviewed, and discussed what was going on in their current lives.

The book "Hiroshima" is a nonfiction history book, and is written about first hand events.  However, the point of view is not first person, but third person, because John Hersey is writing about their experiences as if he was watching them.  There were minor people that barely played a role in this story, but the major or main people are the six survivors.  They are: Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura, Dr. Masakazu Fujii, Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto, Miss Toshinki Sasaki, Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, and Dr. Terfumi Sasaki.  These people are all very important to the book because they provide the experiences of what went on during and after the bombing.  The book takes place in the Japanese city, Hiroshima in the year 1945 and a few years after.  Some of the book's details include (without giving spoilers), in the first stage, the witnesses were just having normal mornings, but then when the bomb exploded, all the witnesses could see was a blinding light, and then everything was collapsing around them.  One of the witnesses' stories had included patients overfilling the hospital where he worked.  Everyone was scared and hurt.  The second stage/chapter included the witnesses taking in what had just happened.  Fires were spreading quickly and everyone had to find shelter.  Some of the witnesses helped others by getting bandages and aid.  The next part of the book is about the survivors' struggles after the bomb, with injuries and destroyed homes.  The war ends as well on August 15th, with few survivors and many deaths.  The next stage involves the many days after the bomb struck. Some of the six survivors in the book, had extremely bad injuries, and for many survivors, sickness and disease was spreading.  Of the survivors of the Hiroshima bombing, many were permanently injured or lost valuable possessions, houses, and family.  Lastly, this final chapter is about the aftermath of the survivors- 40 years after the bomb struck and what they are currently doing.  The central idea and authors purpose of this book is to inform readers about the historical event of the Hiroshima bombing, using real experiences.

I liked this book because of its concept of getting the experiences of real survivors and writing a book about true events.  I feel more knowledgeable about the Hiroshima bombing now, but in a different way.  I can now understand the emotions that the citizens of Hiroshima were going through.  The author also conveyed the stories in such a way that I did not know what was coming next, and there were surprises.  Lastly, the author was not biased towards the Japanese or America when he wrote about the war and the events. I feel Hersey gave a true, detailed account of the events.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about historical events and/or likes to get insight in to certain events that most people may not know.

There is a plethora of well-known wars in our nation’s history, which may seem somber, but it is even more upsetting that some of our wars in which the lives of our American soldiers were lost are now forgotten. This book tells of the Korean War, which was between North and South Korea and raised tensions between the Soviet Union and America (who had formed alliances with opposing sides.) This war began when North Koreans invaded South Korea in 1950, and the American president, Harry S. Truman was alerted. Korea had been split in half after World War II, with the Northern part being entitled to the Soviets, and the Southern part overseen by the Americans. North Korea has a communist government, and South Korea adopted a democracy, which caused tension that led up to the war. Many of the U.S. troops were in Japan at the time, so the South Koreans lost the first few battles. As the Soviet Union supplied the North Koreans with much better equipment and soldiers, the North Koreans gained a lot of ground while the U.S. and South Korea lost many lives. The United Nations then began to supply South Korea with more equipment and soldiers, enabling them to fight back and capture enemy soldiers. Finally, in 1953, just over three years after it began, the fighting ended and the line between North and South Korea remained in the same position. However, the war did raise tensions between the U.S. and Soviet Union, which led into the Cold War.

The genre of this book is a non-fiction historical book because it describes a true event in the history of our country and Korea. The story is told in third-person omniscient point of view by a narrator outside of the story who uses pronouns such as “he” and “they” which are found in the third-person voice. It is omniscient because the author knows the feelings and events striking each person at times. One of the major figures in this war were President Truman, who was the United States President throughout most of this war and organized the United Nations and United States troops to aid the South Koreans. Another important person was General Douglas MacArthur, who was the leading U.S. general and spoke to the President about many affairs regarding the war and Korea. The war took place from June 25, 1950 until July 27, 1953 in North and South Korea. Some of the important parts of the war were the beginning, when President Truman avoided calling it a war so as to be able to deploy U.S. troops without congressional approval. Another important detail was that the war resulted in the death of over twenty-one thousand American troops and many more Korean and United Nation veterans. An additional supporting detail is that the Soviet Union could have actually prevented or delayed the war if they went to the United Nations meeting. This is because the United Nations had a unanimous vote of 9-0 for the war, enabling them to take action. If the vote was 9-1, they would have been delayed. The author’s purpose for writing this was to inform readers and educate them about a time in our world’s history. The central idea of the book is basically that the Korean War was a war that impacted the affairs of many other countries. The author develops this idea throughout the book by describing international correspondents and the effects throughout the world.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, mainly because I didn’t know much about the Korean War before I read it, and I was able to learn a great amount. One facet of this book that I really appreciated were the images. Some depicted the harsh conditions that soldiers faced, and as many say- “a picture’s worth a thousand words”. Others showed important people, such as the first South Korean elected president, Syngman Rhee. The captions were descriptive, and offered valuable insight as to what was occurring within the picture and the context of the story. Another text feature that was pleasing were small text boxes on some of the pages. The information in these described fun facts and unusual and fascinating information. I would recommend this book to anyone with an open mind or a passion for learning new things. I, myself, am not the biggest history enthusiast, but this book captured my attention and kept me engaged through descriptions of events and graphics. All in all, this was an incredible book!

“What is courage? What is strength? Perhaps it is being ready to fight for your nation even when your nation isn’t ready to fight for you.” This quote from “Courage Has No Color” by Tanya Lee Stone really shows the truth behind what the first black paratroop unit had to go through, in order to prove that they had just the same rights as the white paratroopers did. The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion was also known as the Triple Nickels and was the first all- black paratroop unit formed in American history. The Triple Nickels were segregated from the white paratroopers because of their skin color even though they trained the same way and were all fighting for the same reason. That reason being to protect the United States from threats like Adolf Hitler during World War 2. This was a crucial time for America and for the Triple Nickels for this unit knew that it was time for them to prove their loyalty and worth and it would be a big step forward for African Americans. Instead of using this passion for the war, the Triple Nickels were given Operation Firefly which told them to assist firefighters because it was lightning season and the balloon bombs the Japanese were sending could detonate and cause forest fires. This seemed more like an excuse to avoid using the Triple Nickels in war because out of the 36 forest fires they managed to contain, only very few were found to be results of the balloon bombs. After World War 2 ended the Triple Nickels continued to put out fires until they were assigned to the 13th Airborne Division where they were still treated unfairly. General Major James M. Gavin changed the Triple Nickels’ lives and history forever by integrating the Triple Nickels with the 82nd Airborne Division. This is where skin color did not matter because soldiers were soldiers who fought with the same purpose and America could finally see that important truth.

The genre of this book is nonfiction history because it tells of the true story of America’s first black paratroopers. The book is told from the third person point of view because the author is telling the story. There were many people mentioned that played an important role in the book. One of them is Walter Morris who was the first African American enlisted man that was accepted for the airborne forces. Another important person is Bradley Biggs who was the first African American officer and was mentioned all throughout the book. Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt also played a major part in the book for they were determined to improve the conditions African Americans had to face. Also, stated above, Major General James M. Gavin who forever impacted history. The other original members of the Triple Nickels were Calvin Beal, Clarence Beavers, Ned Bess, Hubert Bridges, Lonnie Duke, McKinley Godfrey Jr., Robert Greene, James Kornegay, Alvin Moon, Leo Reed, Samuel Robinson, Carstell Stewart, Jack Tillis, Roger Walden, Daniel Weil and Elijah Websy. The other original officers of the Triple Nickels were Clifford Allen, Edward Baker, Warren Cornelius, Jasper Ross and Edwin Wills. This story takes place from the September of 1940 to the October of 1953 even though the journey felt so much longer. The setting of the story takes place all over the United States because the Triple Nickels would constantly move from place to place. It starts from Tuskegee, Alabama where the institute there would hold a training program for black pilots. The story then moves to Fort Benning in Georgia where training for the Triple Nickels started. The Triple Nickels then move to North Carolina to another camp. Later on the Triple Nickels were split into two groups, one stayed in Pendleton, Oregon and the other group moved to Chico, California where they learned to become smokejumpers which was how they assisted the firefighters. They stayed here for a good amount of time and moved on to different places. These were the main places the story took place in and the supporting details that happened in each place. The central idea of this book is that the color of your skin does not define who you are and you can’t let anything hold you back from doing something if you believe it’s the right thing to do or it will make a positive difference in the world. The author’s purpose for writing this book was to inform everyone about the unknown group of people who made our world today as we know it. This is because without the Triple Nickels, America’s military could still be segregated today. So it’s important that people know who the Triple Nickels are and the hardships they faced for our country.

I sincerely enjoyed reading this book because the topic really intrigued me. I had no clue who the Triple Nickels were or even what a paratrooper was but something about the book made me want to read it. I thought the book would turn out to be a boring story about some event in history but the book definitely proved me wrong. The book was a page turner because of the fact that I had no prior knowledge of the subject so I wanted to find out more and each page held knew information. “Courage Has No Color” showed me that there is so much more to America’s history than we think we know. It also showed me that people like the Triple Nickels made a huge impact on our history and it’s because of them that our world is like it is today. Like I said before if the Triple Nickels were not formed then who knows what our world would be like today. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t like reading history books because if you give it a chance, this book will change your mind about the genre like it did mine. As Ashley Bryan, a black veteran of World War II, stated “Despite the indecencies directed toward them because of color, the black paratroopers held rather to the decencies of people who honored their gifts of service to the nation despite color.”

The Forgotten 500 tells the account of Operation Halyard in the 1944 the largest rescue ever of downed American airmen. More than 500 U.S. airmen were rescued with same of other nations. This book puts together the stories of a dozen young airmen shot down in Yugoslavia during bombing runs. These were the stories of young men who were eager to join the war and fight Germany during World War 2.

The genre is history. The point of view that this story is told is in third person limited because it does not have all the information on their accounts. The main people are Clare Musgrove and Anthony Orisini. The setting is during World War II and in Serbia. The supporting details are that it tells of acts of courage of making dangerous rescue missions. The central idea of this book was to inform readers of untold stories of young men during that war time period.

I liked this book because it is about World War II, one of my favorite historical events. I also liked this book because it had action and it was also very suspenseful. I would recommend this book to anybody who likes wartime stories and thrilling and suspenseful books.

"A History of the World in 6 Glasses" is a historical book about how certain drinks changed humanity and history. As the title hints, the author speaks about 6 different drinks. These 6 drinks are beer, wine, hard liquor, coffee, tea, Coca Cola. The author speaks of how these 6 drinks changed history. For instance, the author speaks of how beer was one of the reasons why the hunter-gatherer period ended and agriculture began, or how liquor could have been a cause of human subjugation. Tom Standage separates the book into the 6 different drinks and speaks of each separately. He does this for beer, wine, hard liquor, coffee, tea, and Coca Cola. I do not want to spoil too much of this book too you so the last section I will speak of is the tea section. Tom Standage speaks of tea as a symbol of loss of global supremacy for England. Don’t you think to find some information that you never knew on the drinks that people love today, is cool?

The Genre of "A History of the World in 6 Glasses" is a history book. This book is being told in the point of view of the author of the book since it is a secondary source on history topics. This book speaks of many people and does not really focus on single people. For instance, it speaks of the Mesopotamian people, Egyptian people, the Greek, Roman people, and many more. The only time when the book speaks of a single person is when speaking of a god like Ra or a ruler of a city. This book doesn’t take place in a specific time period or place since there is more than one topic and each is related to a totally different place and time. The beer section takes place in multiple cities and towns, while the tea section takes place in totally different places. There are many supporting details in this book. The main details in this book are really the effects of the drinks on the world. For instance, how beer helped civilize people and was the reason why agriculture most likely started because of the ingredients needed to make it, or how hard liquor could have been the cause of human subjugation.

I personally never really enjoyed reading history books, but I really like this one because of the interesting information that I didn’t know about these simple drinks. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t like history and everyone that does like history. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book. So, if you don’t usually like history, give this book a try and see what happens, maybe you'll change your mind. Just like me, you might just learn something new about the drinks that we look at as "simple".

Pearl Harbor Day of Infamy
By Stephanie Fitzgerald
Compass Point Books, 2006

The Vietnam War is a war that has gone down in history and in the books. The reasons behind this are plentiful, but here’s the Vietnam War’s major facts you need to know. The Vietnam War owns many other names, such as the Second Indochina War. The war lasted an incredible nineteen to twenty years. It started from 1954 and came to an end on 1973. The countries that took part in these battles of war were the United States and different parts of Vietnam. There was the North and South of Vietnam. The main reason behind this terrifying violence was “communism.” Communism is a way of government in which the government owns all things like oil, land, and more. Then each person is paid based on their abilities and needs. The North supported communism and the South did not. Some battles of the Vietnam War were “Ap Bac”, “Kien Long”, “Thanh Hoa” and more. One of the main reasons this war is always mentioned in some conversations and is always remembered is because of its horrific casualties. When the war ended, hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives were taken away or wounded. To wrap it up, that is why the Vietnam War is very important and what it was mostly about.

The book “Vietnam War” by Martin Gitlin is a history non-fiction book. It is told in a third-person perspective. The characters in the book is North Vietnam, South Vietnam and the United States. South Vietnam and United Stats fought together against North Vietnam. The book takes place in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. These are countries the war took place in. The war also took place in 1954 to 1973. That is the setting of the book. The Vietnam War was a one of the worst wars of all time, considering the amount of lives lost. At the end of the war, the North Vietnamese won. This means that communism took over all of Vietnam. At first, the South Vietnamese and its ally the United States were almost guaranteed a victory over their enemy. The South had won 37 out of their 45 battles and the United States won every one of their battles. Then during the celebration of “Tet” which is known as the Vietnam new year, the war turned tables. On January 30, 1968, The North struck almost all of South Vietnam. This led to a massive amount of lives lost and tears shed. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people dead. Mostly people from the South and American soldiers. This soon led to the North Vietnam victory. The central idea of this book is about the Vietnam War and what it is about. The author’s purpose is to inform you about the Vietnam War.

“Vietnam War” by Martin Gitlin is an amazing book, but it just doesn’t suit my variety and interests. I personally prefer mostly Greek Mythology books and fiction books. If I like a non-fiction book, it is mostly about a topic I really find interesting. If you are the type of person who likes to learn about different events in the past you will enjoy this book. Especially, if you like books that inform you about wars and action. This book is a very informative book and you will learn a ton of facts from it. That is “Vietnam War” by Martin Gitlin.

In this book, Sylvia Engdahl gives an insight about the events that led to the building of the Panama Canal and some of the issues surrounding the canal. The United States started the construction of the canal through the Isthmus of Panama in 1903. The purpose of the canal was to help the U.S ship and receive goods quickly and cheaply between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. There were many setbacks during and before the construction of the Panama Canal however. For example, when the U.S tried to negotiate with Columbia to build the canal through Panama, they rejected their offer. In response, President Roosevelt sent in U.S warships to Panama and Colombian troops could not negotiate with the Panamanians as well as the U.S Navy so as a result, Panama triumphed and gained their independence. As you can see, building the Panama Canal wasn’t easy but the United States persevered and worked hard until it was finally complete.
“Building the Panama Canal” is a history book which is non-fiction. This book is told in a third-person point of view as it is composed of multiple primary and secondary sources. There were many important people in this book. Theodore Roosevelt was easily the most important figure in this book as he dedicated most of his president years to this canal. Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, John Hay, Omar Torrijos, Tomás Herrán, and George Washington Goethals are among the other important figures in this book. This book takes place in the time period from 1850-1999 in the United States, Columbia, and Panama. This canal would not be in Panama today if it wasn’t for John Hay because the canal was originally proposed to be built in Nicaragua. As I said before, there were many setbacks to building the canal. Unfortunately, more than 25,000 workers died during the construction of the canal. The author’s purpose in this book was to inform readers on one of America’s greatest engineering feats in history. Today, between 13,000 and 14,000 ships use the Panama Canal every year.
There were many things that I liked about this book. I found it very interesting on how the Panama Canal was built and how the U.S dealt with each problem surrounding the construction of the canal. I also liked the amount of detail put forth to describe the Panama Canal itself in the book. Another aspect that I liked was the determination that the United States had to complete the Panama Canal. I recommend this book to anyone who likes or appreciates American history or engineering feats because that’s what this book is mainly about.

In 1821 the whaleship is ready to set sail. Sailing through the ocean, looking for sperm whales to harvest the oil. It is not close to being an easy job taking down these massive creatures. The whole crew was equipped with weapons and were ready to take down the massive sperm whale. If you think that was hard try turning the whale into oil for the ship. It drained the crew more than the first job did. Floating across the ocean didn’t make it any easier. The crew came across another whaleship and were demanded to stop it. When they climbed aboard the other ship, they found human bones everywhere. Regrouping, the crew continues their search for sperm whales.  Suddenly a huge storm hits, nearly tipping the whole ship over. The captain was convinced to keep going by crew members. The crew could not find one whale for a long time. The crew then finds itself in South America and their luck is finally changing. They sail to a place where there are tons of sperm whales. Unfortunately, their luck runs out. For the first time, a sperm whale attacks the ship. One of the crew members failed to kill the whale and that stays with him throughout. The sailors begin to starve once they are separated. Out of desperation they result to cannibalism and eat one of their crew members. The few survivors are rescued by a crew member but the memory haunts them forever.

The book “In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex” is a history book. The book describes an actual past event which makes it history.  The book is told by the author and sometimes by the characters. The people in the book were all the crew members. Some of the crew members were George Pollard, Jr, Owen Chase, Thomas Nickerson, Owen Coffin and the other crew members. The only animals in the story was the sperm whales. The book took place in the Pacific Ocean in the early 19th century. Some supporting details was there being 20 crew members on the ship, the first ever sperm whale attack, a massive storm, and there were 8 survivors. The authors purpose for writing this book was to describe what happened to the members and the ship during the whaleship Essex. He did that by telling the reader how the ship sunk, how they managed to survive, and multiple other things.
I didn’t like this book because I found it boring since I don’t like history books. Although there were some interesting parts in the book, there was not enough for me to like it. I would like to read something that is funny or has more action then “In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex”. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about tragic things that happened in the past. For example, if someone likes the Titanic they may enjoy this book.

The non-fiction text Pearl Harbor Day of Infamy by Stephanie Fitzgerald is a historical nonfiction context about the attack on Pearl Harbor and what happened that day as well as the aftermath of it. “On December 7, 1941, marks one of the darkest days in the United States history.” As the text states the bombardment on Pearl Harbor was very crucial to U.S and the attack even started the World War II the book shows who, when, where, and why Japan attacked the U.S. It also has photographic evidence of the destruction, the speeches, armies, naval ships, air force and more. All in all, Pearl Harbor Day of Infamy is a very good book.

Pearl Harbor Day of Infamy is a nonfictional history book since it is based on a true story and has primary sources such as photographs of the event. The point of view is third person and the subject telling the story is the narrator. The main character in the book is Theodore Roosevelt. The setting is around December 7, 1941 and it takes place in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Some supporting details are when Japan struck Pearl Harbor, the outcome on America, and the conclusion of the war. The authors point of view or central idea is to inform about one of the darkest days in history.

If you like to read historical nonfiction books, you would love this book because it has a lot of details, a timeline about the events that occurred during that time period, glossary, sources for information and a bibliography and also an index. All in all, this is a great book for all historical nonfiction lovers.

The book “Bloody Times” is about the times during the Civil War and how the Yankees also known as the Union which was the northern part of the U.S. was taking over the Southern part of the U.S. also known as the Confederate. It briefly explains all the details to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination by John W. Booth. It explains how Lincoln’s funeral train went from Washington D.C. all the way to Springfield, Illinois. It also shows how Jefferson Davis the president of the Confederate states was fleeing from the Unions so they won’t capture him and his journey when he went through 4 states just so he could save the Confederacy but he failed and became a prisoner.

The book “Bloody Times” is a nonfiction history. The point of view was told in third person point of view but had many quotes in it. The most important people in the book are Abraham Lincoln the president of the United States. Jefferson Davis the president of the Confederate states. Mary Lincoln the wife of President Abraham Lincoln. Varina Davis the wife of Jefferson Davis. Edwin D. Stanton the secretary of war for the Union. John W. Booth the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Finally, Robert and Tad Lincoln who are the two sons of Abraham and Mary Lincoln. The story takes place in the United States but the most important states are Washington D.C., Springfield Illinois, and Richmond Virginia. Some of the supporting details are that Jefferson Davis continued to fight for the Confederate states even though most of the armies quit. Abraham Lincoln was also very generous with the Confederates when he captured their capital city. After Lincolns death Edwin Stanton wanted to capture John Booth then focus on Jefferson Davis because how mad he was about them. When both presidents also died both parts of the country was devastated for the deaths of both their presidents. Edwin Stanton was also very serious about Abraham Lincoln’s funeral and he made sure that all the rules were met and everything was on time. The central idea or the author’s purpose was to inform us about the past and what happened after the civil war. Also to inform us about Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.

I really enjoyed the book “Bloody Times”. I enjoyed it because the sequence of events was really interesting and when I started reading the book I couldn’t put it down. The way they author described everything like Abraham Lincoln’s murder was so detailed it felt like I was there and I was in front of Lincoln when he was dying. I also wanted to know what happens to both presidents because it was that interesting. I would recommend this book to someone who is interested with American history because then this would be the perfect book. Also anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery would find this book very interesting. I absolutely enjoyed learning about this piece of history and I’m sure any reader will too.

This war began on July 18, 1914. It all began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This small conflict grew fast and soon enough, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, and France were involved because of the treaties they all signed. What I mean by this is some of them signed treaties to protect other countries and when those countries are in danger or in war, that country must protect them. It’s like a promise of friendship. Eastern and western fronts opened extremely fast along the borders of Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Then there were a series of battles and/or events which truly set the war off. Germany went to attack Belgium, then France. Russia forwarded an attack against Germany and Austria. Now in the South, Austria attacked Serbia. Multiple battles went on and eventually the Ottoman Empire joined the battle on 1914. Since the Ottoman Empire was powerful, many countries launched attacks at them but not all worked. Mainly the middle of the war was battled with trench warfare. (Trench warfare is a type of land warfare using occupied fighting lines consisting largely of trenches.) In early April, The U.S was angered by attacks on them and later declared war on Germany. Following that, Russia pulled out of the war due to the Bolshevik Revolution. The war later ended in the late fall of 1918, when the member countries of Central Power signed armistice agreements, one by one.

This book was a history book and was told in third person point of view. Some important characters in the book, “World War I: A Short History” are Prince Max Von Baden, was the chancellor of Germany and was in control of Germany for a short period of time to arrange armistice, Winston Churchill, the First Lord of British Admiralty, Constantine I, the King of Greece for a long period of time, Franz Joseph I, the Emperor of Austria-Hungary until death, Alexander Samsonov, the general in command for Russia’s second army, Radomir Putnik, the general in command for Russia’s first army and John J. Pershing, the American general in command for all U.S army. Those were just some important people in this war.

I didn’t like this book because, well I’m not a big fan of war and fighting because that’s just not right in my opinion. So this book wasn’t the most enjoyable. I would recommend this to my friend Anthony who is really into social studies of such. I would recommend this book to whoever likes war or is interested in battles or history.

This book is about when Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire in May 1915. Nearly 750,000 Italian troops were killed in savage. To maintain discipline, The General restored the Roman practice of decimation (removal of a tenth), by executing random members of units that retreated or rebelled.
The book that I read was a history book. When I read it I realized it was in second person point of view. There were a lot of people in this book, a lot of Italian Veterans and Austrians. The setting took place in Italy in May 1915. Some supporting details in this book is that on May in 1915 Italy declared war but over 750,000 people died, when they went up against the Habsburg Empire. I believe that the author's purpose in this book is to inform that historian Mark Thompson relates the saga of the Italian front, that preceded lots of conflicts.
I would recommend this book to a few my friends because the story is mostly about War and what caused it and since there is so much tension in it we would all want to know when would they be at peace. Also a few my friends actually like history and they would like to know more about wars what caused them and how did they resolve their conflicts, so I believe that the White War would be perfect for them

The Korean War started on June 25th, 1950 at about 4 a.m. The North Koreans had invaded South Korea and they had no idea this was going to happen. There were about 90,000 trained troops for North Korea, they split up to invade many parts at the same time. The United Nations had already started helping and they called North Korea to stop the invasion. However, North Korea didn’t agree so on June 27th the U.N. passed a resolution, which helped defend South Korea from the invaders. The war lasted almost three years, with constant fighting. Korea was still split up into two separate nations, so they stayed divided. President Rhee never signed the peace agreement, so for the people living in Korea this meant the war never ended. This war was also known as the forgotten war because many people simply lost interest. However, the same sacrifices were made just like other wars that are well known.
This book is nonfiction because it talks about an event in history that actually occurred.  This book was told in third person point of view. The important people in this book were North Koreans, South Koreans, United States and United Nations. The Korean War took place mostly in South Korea in the late 1900s.  There are many important plot points in this story. One supporting detail is that the border was called the 38th parallel. It cut the country in half but after World War II Korea was one country. Another supporting detail is that The Korean War was another event in the Cold War, which was a war between South and North Korea, but both America and Russia helped. The last supporting detail is that the United States was encountering a very harsh winter and that their enemy’s population was growing and it would be difficult to win. The central idea or author’s purpose for writing this book was to explain the events before, after and during The Korean War.  Neither side during this war agreed on political views and that was the biggest reason for the war.
I really enjoyed reading this book because I thought it was interesting to learn about this war. Before reading this book, I hadn’t known much about The Korean War. All the events in the passage are important in history. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about events that have already occurred.  Also, this war is often forgotten so it’s interesting to learn new things.

Lone Survivor tells the heroic story of four U.S. Navy SEALs and the rough obstacles they went through on their mission Operation Red Wings. The story starts off with Marcus Luttrell describing his childhood and his conditioning to prepare for the Navy SEALS. After some brutal training, he accomplished it. He and some other members of the military elite (SEAL team 10) headed to enemy territory, to complete their mission, Operation Red Wings, which was to capture or kill al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. On the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border, the four SEALs were surrounded by more than 100 Taliban warriors with no backup. A rescue came through but was then shot down and all aboard were killed. His squad mates fought bravely and valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive. Terribly injured and struggling to survive, he was taken by kind Afghan villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors. Marcus had many close encounters where Taliban members beat him and tried to hunt him down. A while after rescue finally came and Marcus was safe.
Lone Survivor is a military history book. It is told by Marcus Luttrell, the only survivor of Operation Red Wings. The people in the story were U.S. Navy seals, Taliban warriors and the Afghan villagers. The main SEALs were Marcus Luttrell, Michael P. Murphy, Matthew Axelson and Danny Dietz. The story takes place in Afghanistan during the 21st century. An important detail to take note of, is when the SEALs encounter unarmed shepherds on Hindu Kush and let them go because of their better instincts. This is important because about an hour later they came back with Taliban warriors where it was now over 100 Taliban warriors against four Navy SEALs who had no backup. This also caused the rescue team to be shot down with all on board being killed, leaving Marcus the only survivor and extremely injured. Another important detail is the sympathetic villagers who found and took Marcus and kept him from the Taliban warriors. This lead to his survival and return to home. The authors purpose was to show people the heroic story of SEAL team 10 and the grand actions that they did. It may also be to inform us about what our soldiers have to go through.
I enjoyed this book because of how powerful it was and informing me about the great men who serve our country. This book is full of courage and sacrifice, which I love because it really enlightened me on real life things. I would recommend this rich chronicle of honor and patriotism to anyone, it is truly such a great book everyone would enjoy, especially those who enjoy emotion full books.

The book starts off with a firsthand account of the Holocaust. It focused on the Nazi that is trying to be apprehended in this book. The account talks about the Nazi (Adolf Eichmann) visiting the camp in which the witness Zeev Sapir is located. It speaks of how Eichmann had told the Jews that they would be released once the war was over, and that they were only in the camps for their own safety. Next, the author writes about how notoriously infamous Eichmann is, and why the Israeli government needs to catch him. The Israelis first need to find where Eichmann’s home is. They send someone to talk to Eichmann’s mistresses, his wife, and his kids about where he might be. He gets a lead from one of the mistresses saying that he fled to Argentina after the war. The Israelis send two people to search for Eichmann. They eventually locate him in a one- room, run down shack that they couldn’t even fathom to be his home. The two men then go back to Israel to explain to the government what they observed at the house. The Israeli government assembles a team to catch Eichmann, and to bring him back to Israel to stand fair trial against an unbiased judge. The team consisted of five men that each had their own part in the capture, such as making fake passports and disguises. After a few weeks of observation, the team was ready to catch Eichmann. They parked two cars near the driveway to his house, and waited for Eichmann to get off the bus that he took home five days a week. Once he got off the bus, one car turned their lights on to blind Eichmann while another person got out of the other car and grabbed him. He was then forced into the car and driven off back to their safe house. Eichmann was then interrogated, and after a few days, he gave in and signed the paper confirming him coming to Israel willingly to stand trial. Then, Eichmann was escorted to the plane that was being used to bring him back to Israel, and was sedated. One member of the team that captured him built a false wall in the plane just in case the plane was searched when they stopped to refuel. Finally, Eichmann was delivered to Israel to stand trial. He was found guilty, and was hanged later that month.
The book, “The Nazi Hunters,” is a nonfiction book. It is about real events that took place between 1938 and 1967. The point of view of this story is third-person omniscient because the narrator knows what everyone is doing, feeling, and thinking. Every single person in this book is important because they all contributed in some way shape or form to the capture of Adolph Eichmann. The story mainly takes place in Argentina between the years 1958 to 1960. Some main supporting details are the firsthand accounts of the sightings of Eichmann at Auschwitz and other camps, and how important it was for him to be brought to justice. The central idea of the story is that the Holocaust was a mass genocide that was inhuman and morally wrong. The author’s purpose is to inform readers about the events of the past, specifically finding Adolf Eichmann.
I personally like the book. The beginning of the book made me think to myself, why would anyone take part in and support a mass genocide that killed over six million people? Only mentally sick people would even think of letting that happen. The halfway point of the book created such an anger inside me that wanted to catch Eichmann and bring him to justice. I wanted to just hop inside the pages of the book and grab Eichmann so I could hand him over to the Israelis. Towards the end of the book however, I was satisfied due to the fact that Eichmann had been brought to justice and sentenced to death by hanging. I would recommend this book to Dilhara D. because of his will to try new genres and be open-minded to new things. Hence, the book, “The Nazi Hunters” was a very satisfying story that played with your emotions.

The book I read this month was about the great empire of Ancient Egypt. The empire lasted from 3050 BC to 332 BC. The large empire housed millions of Egyptians who were ruled by many leaders, who the people of Egypt called pharaohs. Some of these pharaohs include King Tut, Anejdib, Djet, and Semerkhet. The book informs the reader about many different things about Ancient Egypt. One thing this book speaks a lot about is the land Ancient Egypt was built upon. The Nile, which is a very famous river in Egypt, was the foundation of life in Egypt, due to the fact that there weren’t very many places that had water. Also, when the river overflowed, the flooding left behind silt which is very good for agricultural needs. For many years, the people of Egypt prospered. Some people believe that Egyptians were always obsessed with death, since they would prepare people for the afterlife, but they actually enjoyed and cherished life. They believed that your afterlife should be just as good as your life as a living person.
The genre of this book is a non-fiction history book. This is shown by the use of real and verified facts. The point of view in this book is third person omniscient, due to the fact that there is no use of I, me, or my. The people in the book include the inhabitants and pharaohs of Egypt. The setting and time period of this history book is ancient Egypt during the time period 3050BC to 332BC. The central idea of the book was that ancient Egypt was a very large and interesting empire, with many amazing assets. One asset is the grand Nile River. Another asset was the wonderful society of the Egyptians. According to the book, “The Egyptians were practical, tradition-loving, conservative, orderly, and tolerant.”  This evidence shows the Egyptians were very low maintenance people. The book also says that “They (Egyptians) loved peace and order, and preferred peace to war.” This also shows they were very kind people.  The author’s purpose of writing this book is to inform people about the wonders of Ancient Egypt.
I really liked this book due to the fact that it gave me a lot more information on a topic I enjoy. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about ancient empires, such as Egypt, or who loves history. This book gives the reader lots of useful and interesting information about the history, society, culture and religion of Ancient Egypt.

“Martin Luther King Jr.” is a historical book describing the life of the incredibly influential man that changed the mid 1900’s. This informational text contains facts of his early life, his family, events that made him famous, his struggles, his dreams for the world, his few failed attempts in nonviolence, and his unfortunate death. When reading this book, there is no doubt that you shall be immersed in knowledge of this hero.

Since it is a historical book with true facts and no fiction whatsoever, it is non-fiction. This book is told from the point of view of the narrator. He speaks of Martin Luther King’s life from birth to death. The most important people listed in the book are Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, Rosa Parks, and David Henry Thoreau (his muses for his nonviolent acts), Coretta Scott King- his wife, John and Robert Kennedy- people that helped protect him, J. Edgar Hoover- sent FBI agents to monitor King’s activities, Malcolm X- the man that disagreed with King’s nonviolence, and President Johnson, who wished to honor Martin Luther King Jr. after his death. The time that the book takes place in is between 1929 and 1968 in places such as Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, and more. The basis of the whole book is the life and times of Martin Luther King Jr. - the work consists of simple, to ideally complex information. In this book, I learned things about his family, along with information on public authority figures who had importance to King’s work that I had not previously known. I believe the authors purpose for providing the world with these interesting facts might be to educate the uneducated, or maybe to add to the plethora of information few might have.

What I was truly fascinated by in this book was the amount of strangely specific details the author had. So many things I learned took me by surprise. The intricacy of the author’s work was a great quality in my eyes. I would recommend the book to people who enjoy getting more information, people who like digging deep into the past. If you’re one of those people, the secrets now shown will give you great pleasure. However, even if you’re not that type of person, I’m sure you will enjoy this incredibly informative piece of literature.

The book “Attack on Pearl Harbor” is about how the Japanese began war with the U.S. The Japanese approached the war with the bombing of the pearl harbor which started it all. Japan grew tremendous power which led the U.S to feel threatened by them. Japan went into war mainly to gain/guarantee access to natural resources as well as the oil embargo. The imperial navy was the most striking symbol of Japans rise to world power status. December 7th, 1941 is the day the surprise attack was held which changed the course of World War 2.  Also, the attack on pearl harbor was just the beginning of this war. Japan launched a series of attacks across southeast Asia.

The genre of this book is history. They tell you the history of World War II and the attack of the pearl harbor. The point of view of this story is third person omniscient. It is all knowing and it uses he, she, it, and they. The most important people in this book is Japan citizens and the troops as well as American troops and citizens. These people are very important to the story because the war wouldn’t take place with both countries and the people in each place. The time period that takes place in this story is 1939 to 1945. The story takes place all over the world but mainly in Japan and America. Some details that show what happened in the Pearl Harbor. The text states, “The attack on Pearl Harbor had its roots in growing tension between the United States and Japan. Japan had territorial ambitions in the pacific and china.” This excerpt describes Japans intentions in war. The authors purpose of this book is to inform readers about the tragedies of World War II and specifically the Pearl Harbor attack.

I liked how the book presented the facts about World War II in interesting ways. I also like the facts they used that were very intriguing to the reader. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. This Is because the author teaches you about World War II, what happened in World War II, and specifically pearl harbor. I would rate this book an 8 and I would recommend it to people who like world history. It shows you times in history that are related to that specific time in history. Hence, overall the “Attack on Pearl Harbor” was a great book.

The book World War II is a historical book that tells about World War II and how both sides fought, and their roles in the war, such as Germany, France, Japan, the United States and other nations. The war lasted a total of four years with American involvement, eight years in the Pacific, and six years in Europe. American forces didn't really get involved until the bombing of Pearl Harbor, but before that they would send materials to their allies fight in Europe and Great Britain overseas. This task however became more difficult when the Nazi submarines, also called U-boats, came into the war. Eventually America became involved in the war and helped their allies battle against the Germans.

This book is a nonfiction historical book that tells the events of World War II and how the nations fought. The point of view in which the book is being told is a third person point of view since it doesn't use any words to describe something in first person and the narrator isn't in the war. The people in this book are president Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, British prime minister Winston Churchill, and other politically powerful men in other countries. The book takes place in September 1931, less than 21 years after the first World War and continues to carry on through the remainder of the war. The United States didn't really become active in the war until the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the sinking of many supply boats. In the last world war the US hadn't seen any real combat since the war had ended by the time they made it overseas, which caused problems in training since they really didn't know what they would run into. In order to acquire more troops Congress established the selective service system, which represented the nation’s first peace time draft. Over time the Pacific would slowly begin to change for the better after what the Japanese forces have done (Pearl Harbor, capturing Guam, and other things), but now the US faced a problem in the Atlantic sea. German U-boats were sinking ships with soldiers and supplies on them to help their allies. To help defend against German submarines the invention of the sonar radar came into place which sent out signals that bounced back objects and revealed their location so we could destroy them. The same technology was put into planes to they could bomb enemy vessels from above. Later in the war, the US and it's allied troops launched an assault on Normandy beach to take down Hitler and his forces, the assault was known as D-Day. Planes loaded with soldiers would jump out and land on Normandy to assist the troops in the amphibious tanks and those loading out of boats to take out the German troops and Hitler. while approaching their designated areas the pilots and drivers got mixed up and some soldiers ended up 35 miles away from their target, but nevertheless the troops found their way back and completed their task and successfully beat the Germans. Afterwards they had to take care of Japan so they dropped a nuclear bomb on them until they surrendered, which they did after we dropped two bombs on them. This is how the United States and its allies won the war.

I liked how the book provided a lot of information about the second world war and how the nations planned their attacks and strategized their options. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes weapons or historical wars and battles.

This book was written in different volumes that cover the whole topic, but each one is about 1,500 pages so the first one was good enough. The first volume talks about the end of the golden age and the fall of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. There were many things that were involved to this rise and fall; including battles, people, religion, and different eras.

This book's genre is history. Edward Gibbon is the person telling the story in third person. Important people are; Marcus Antoninus, Commodus, Christians, and the British.  The book takes place in Rome around 476 C.E. Some details from the text are, "...and after wards, from the death of Marcus Antoninus, to deduce the most important circumstances of its decline and fall; a revolution which will ever be remembered, and is still felt by the nations of the earth." and, "A candid but rational inquiry into the progress and establishment of Christianity may be considered as a very essential part of the history of the Roman Empire.". The central idea/author's purpose of this book was to inform the reader about the decline of the Roman Empire.

What I liked about the book was the amount of information it had was enormous. I liked this because it showed dedication in the author's purpose of informing anyone about the subject. I would definitely dedicate this book to anyone who has a passion for history and likes to have that extra little bit of knowledge. I would also dedicate this book to anyone who enjoys reading because Edward Gibbon's knowledge about the Roman Empire is split into 6 volumes; meaning anyone who enjoys reading, will have a blast reading about 9,000 pages.

The book I read was “An American Plague” by Jim Murphy. This book is about the Yellow Fever outbreak in Philadelphia during 1793. This book describes the series of events that took place during the outbreak all the way from the start. One August day in Philadelphia a man got a fever. After the fever, he went through several violent seizures and then died. This was what is believed to have started the plague because after that, many people started to get ill. This illness was described as a ‘Silent Stalker’ and as it went around Philadelphia it took a big toll on the city’s residents. Every day the death rate went up. At first, many people including doctors did not think the cause of so many deaths was the yellow fever; they thought that it was just a fever being spread through the town. Many people did not think that a vicious disease like yellow fever could have invaded Philadelphia. As weeks passed and lives were lost, the city of Philadelphia had become very unsafe. As some came to the realization that the illness being spread was indeed yellow fever, many people left the city. The few brave doctors and healthy citizens’, most of whom were living in poverty left in Philadelphia came up with ways to combat the disease, or else it would have left them in defeat.

The genre of “An American Plague” is History. It is a Non-Fiction history book because it talks about an event that really happened. The point of view this book is told in is third person, by the author Jim Murphy. There are many people mentioned in this book but in my opinion, there were only a few people that really had an impact on Philadelphia during this plague. One person was Benjamin Rush, a physician who stayed in Philadelphia to assist those ill with yellow fever despite having moved his family to the countryside and having suffered the illness twice himself. Two other people that stood out to me are Peter Helm and Stephen Girard. These two men volunteered to manage Bush Hill, a house where those with yellow fever resided. Bush Hill was packed with sick people, and very disorganized. Stepping one foot into the building would put you at great risk for yellow fever. Despite the risks, Helm and Girard volunteered and took over Bush Hill. The two men made Bush Hill a safer and cleaner place to be. They spaced out the ill in newly constructed buildings and got Bush Hill into top shape. Although the space was still contaminated with yellow fever they turned a once described ‘Pest House’ into an organized facility for the sick. Two other men were Absalom Jones and Richard Allen. These two men inspired blacks in their church to help out the whites that were battling yellow fever. Although Jones and Allen faced prejudice, they went out along with black nurses to help the people of Philadelphia. All played heroic roles during this time assisting the sick despite the risks being put upon their well-being, such as cleaning vomit and sweat from those with yellow fever every day. They helped the ill get better despite what skin color they were. The book takes place in 1793 between August 1st and November 9th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The supporting details in this book are how the outbreak started in Philadelphia and caused a lot of people to die. This made many people leave and left the few healthy and brave people and mass amounts of sick in Philadelphia. Because there were so many sick people, the healthy citizens had to come up with ways to aid them and keep the city clean. Eventually, the outbreak ended and many people returned to Philadelphia. The central idea of this book is yellow fever took a huge toll on Philadelphia and its people. The author’s purpose was to inform readers about the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. The author wants to show what took place during the American plague, and how it was eventually ended.

I found every chapter of this book fascinating. I liked how informative the book was and how it put everything into chronological order. With the book being put into chronological order, it made me understand the events happening and why they were happening better than I would if it wasn’t in this order. I have never learned about yellow fever and what had happened during the American Plague until I read this book. Now that I have read it, I know all about the Plague, which gives me more knowledge about American history. I recommend this book to anyone who likes American history. If you are also interested in the history of medicine over time and how people used to practice medicine, you will enjoy this book. If you are squeamish when it comes to things like diseases, I don’t recommend this book to you.

During the 1700s there were not many ways to spy on enemies during war as today there are drones and a much bigger technological advance. Therefore, only few ways to spy on enemies were used and one way that Washington had used during the Revolutionary War was a top-secret group called the Culper Spy Ring. The Culper Spy Ring was a group of six people who spied on the British and was thought to be one of the main reasons why the British was defeated by the colonies lead by George Washington. Although this was a very little known tactic that was used by Washington to win the war, as the author states that is one of the main reasons why he published the book. The secret six were actually made of intelligent and strategic people although they had lived ordinary lives, such as owning a tavern, being a merchant, or just being a mysterious woman as one of the six was like that and was only known by the number 355. George Washington knew he would not be able to win the war with just military force and after a hasty retreat he realized he needed to be more strategic which is exactly what he had done by gathering the secret six.
The genre of this book is history, it is history because it explains a historic event that had happened during the revolutionary war and was a big part of history and how the British was defeated by the North American Colonies. The point of view is third person as the narrator explains each event and what was happening to each person during the war and is not first person as it shows each character’s perspective. There were many people the book mentions although the main people that are focused on are Washington and the secret six, Robert Townsend, a newspaper editor; Austin Roe, a bartender; Celeb Brewster, a longshoreman; Abraham Woodhull, who traveled to and from New York; James Rivington, who owned a coffeehouse; and finally a mysterious female only known as Agent 355. This book takes place on the battleground during the 1700s, while the revolutionary war was taking place although was then ended because of this strategic plan thought by George Washington. A young Patriot named Nathan Hale had volunteered to conduct a spy mission on the loyalists although was a disastrous fail although Nathan’s death actually showed Washington how he needed to outsmart the British and is how he came up with the secret six and worked out to Washington’s advantage as they ended up winning the war. The authors purpose of writing this book is to explain a strategic plan used by Washington to win the war as this plan was not very well known as not many people knew this was mainly how they won the war.
I liked how intense the book was and how much suspense was build up in the book, as each chapter would keep me on the edge of my seat. I would recommend this to people who like action and suspense in a book because this book has many elements that keep you interested into the book, even people who do not like to read books a lot they will most likely still like this book because it keeps the reader's attention and does not lose it which an element that is the greatest books. If you are not into boring books that take a while to get into the suspense and action, then you will definitely like this book. Another main reason of why I like this book is because it has a good message for why it was written and was written very well, as it was written to bring more attention to a very important event that happened although did not have much attention to it at first and people did not know how this was how the Patriots beat the Loyalists in the revolutionary war. As you can see this book is a great book and is recommended to a wide variety as it has many great elements which make it apply to many readers and nonreaders.

The Russian Revolution was one of the most significant events in the 20th century. It changed Russia’s government and its people’s views about life. The events in this revolution were the result of World War l, but a people rising and an empire breaking down were caused by much more than a war. The citizens of Russia weren’t happy with the way Tsar Nicholas II was ruling and wanted a new leader. They chose Vladimir Lenin to lead them and they became the Bolsheviks. So, the Russian Revolution began.
The genre of this book is history. It involves real events and facts from the past which demonstrates it is nonfiction. The point of view in the book is third person- limited. The Bolsheviks wanted equality for the people of Russia. They knew that peasants and workers didn’t get equal rights and were miserable. They were depressed because of bad working conditions such as long hours and low pay. Also, in the 1850’s and early 1900’s, Russia lost many wars, creating lots of casualties and loss of resources. Also, Tsar Nicholas the 2nd was young, inexperienced and as a result, Russia’s economy and government started to decline.   People got angry and were worried about Russia’s future. They also lost faith in Tsar Nicholas. The Bolsheviks wanted to save Russia from its downfall. In order to accomplish this goal, they needed to deprive the royalty of their power. After the Tsar stepped down in 1917 as ordered by the Duma(parliament), Vladimir Lenin planned the assassinations of the Romanovs. Lenin feared that the royal family would be important to the anti-Bolshevism movement. After the tsar and his family were killed in July 1918, there was some instability. Although by the end of 1920, Russia came out as an entirely new country.
To start off with my recommendation, I would like to say the Bolshevik Revolution is a very interesting topic. It demonstrates a lot about power and how being in charge is very important. I learned from the book is that you want people to respect you and have faith in you. The book really shows how people reacted in the past and the extreme measures they took. It showed their way of life and their experiences. The book showed a window into Russia’s past and the incredibly important event that happened. The Bolshevik Revolution generated a new way of thinking about the government, economy, and society. The Bolsheviks wanted to resolve all of Russia’s injustices and social class differences. In some ways, they did succeed. Also, it marked the end of a 300-year dynasty and left the power in the hands of a small revolutionary group. In general, I relatively enjoyed the book and am glad that I know things about the Bolshevik Revolution. So, I think people should read this book and learn the history of the Russia and the Bolshevik Revolution.

War in the Middle East: A Reporter’s Story: Black September and the Yom Kippur War is about, of course, Black September and the Yom Kippur War. Unlike other books, the author actually experienced these events and provided his own account of them. Wilborn Hampton is a reporter/journalist that was assigned to cover active events. In fact, he was actually stuck in the middle of a war and its crossfire while living in the InterContinental Hotel. The hotel was in terrible condition in the time of the war: deprived of water and electricity, it is fascinating that Hampton actually got this book out. But overall, this is just an amazing book and an excellent primary source.
The genre of this book is history because it talks about important events that happened in the past. The person that is telling the story is the author himself, Wilborn Hampton. The people in this story are Hampton, leaders of different armies, and the battling countries themselves. The story took place in Jordan and the time period was in the late 1900s. The author’s main purpose writing this book was to give people a first-person point of view of a historical event and to show them what it feels like to be in the middle of chaos. The book states, “Throughout the day, a confusion of sounds told the story of the continuing chaos.” This shows how scary it is to be surrounded by mayhem.
If you like first-person accounts of historical events, you’d love War in the Middle East: A Reporter’s Story: Black September and the Yom Kippur War. To me, the book was pretty boring because, well, it’s history. It’s also like an autobiography at the same time which is even more displeasing to me. But hey, that’s just me. Many others may like it, like reporters or journalists. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys history or social studies because that’s what this book is all about. I also recommend this to anyone who finds it fascinating that anyone can possibly get out of a war, write about it, and publish a book about it. To me, that’s just straight up amazing and you would probably feel the same.

In “Women Heroes of World War II” we find the many stories of courageous women who risked their lives to help the most they can and save others, from espionage, sabotage, resistance and rescue, it all comes together for what these women did. Many of the women were awarded for the things they did during the harsh times of World War II of what they had risked their lives for, as some women were caught by the Nazis and interrogated then sent to concentration camps. As some women lost their lives doing so or others who lived until the end of war, they were all to be remembered for their actions.
All of the stories are true nonfiction told in third person by the author, in one of these stories we have our main character Monica Wichfeld, she had been part of the Danish Resistance risking her life every day. She was always moving to keep her cover, including coming across others who accompanied her but not very long as she was dedicated.
I had enjoyed reading this book, and recommend this book to all girls of how these girls or women had faced these tasks risking their lives every day. Nothing was impossible or to get in their way, as some may have been caught and put in concentration camp but that didn’t stop them from survival, many lived through the concentration camps and rewarded for their service. Through these harsh times, it may have been hard but nobody ever gave up in what they fought for. This book was very interesting for me and it may take some interest for others too.

Double Victory is a real story of African American women who did huge things to help their country during the World War II. Unfortunately, there was race and gender barriers. This book spotlights the history of ordinary women who stepped out, spoke up, stood up, and defied the rules. Many women fought discrimination at home. At that time, Hazel Dixon Payne, the only woman to serve on the remote Alaska-Canadian Highway protested with an army in India. The writer, Thomasina Walker Johnson became a teacher even though her parents didn’t want her to. She had problems while teaching. Since she was black, people would say bad things and tried to bring her down. Later she stopped becoming a teacher. After a while, she came back and fought for rights. She inspired many women to stood up.
The genre of this book is history because this story contains real events that happened to people back in the past.   The World War II is a true event that happened. This story describes something that women struggled during the war. African American women were not treated right and that is a fact. The point of view in this story is third point of view because the writer uses “She, He, It and They’’. The people in the story are Thomasina Walker Jonson, the government, U.S. army, and a lot of African American women. These people are important to the story because they make the story interesting. Some supporting details are “Allow all black nurses to enlist, and the draft won’t be necessary… If nurses are need so desperately, why isn’t the Army using colored nurses?’’. “My arm gets a little sore slinging a shovel or a pick, but then I forget about it when I think about all those boys over in the Solomons’’. I think the authors’ purpose to write this story is to inform readers of what happened and how women struggled during the World War II. Also, the author wants the reader to know that African American women were never treated equally.
I like the book a lot because it made me learned more about what happened during the World War II. I learned more facts that I didn’t know before. I liked that the book has real pictures that has been taken during the war. I recommend this book to anyone who likes history and wants to learn more about the World War II and what happened during it. Also, someone who is writing an article or essay about African American women would find this book helpful.

This book is about the many presidents of the United States.  From 1945- 2000, Harry Truman to Bill Clinton, every president has had their ups and downs.  While no president has exactly the same political view, Republicans, Democrats, or any other party all have something in common. They have all been elected president of the United States.
This book is non-fiction or more specifically history.  Told in first person point of view from the author's perspective, it is about the presidents from 1945 to 2000.  One detail included is that President Richard Nixon was nicknamed Tricky Dicky.  Also, when Ronald Reagan ran against Jimmy Carter for president, Reagan received about 9,000,000 more popular votes.  The author's purpose for writing this book was to inform the reader about the United States presidents from 1945- 2000.
Something that I really liked about the book was that it was unbiased.  I admired this because politics can be a very sensitive topic and the author did not try to force his own ideas on others, but instead he gave the reader the information needed to come to their own conclusions.  I would recommend this book to everyone because a president is someone who runs the country and it is important for people, especially those able to vote, to be educated about past presidencies.  Hence, I would highly recommend this book.

The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War II. This tragic era evolved between powers in the Western Bloc and powers in the Eastern Bloc. Historians cannot claim this is fully true, but a common timeframe is the period between 1947, the year the Truman Doctrine was announced, and 1991, the year the Soviet Union collapsed. The Cold War lasted about 45 years. It involved more parts of the world then World War II. It leads the death of millions of people in central and South America, Africa, the Middle East, and in Central and South East Asia. The Cold War had taken a major impact throughout the world. Even after the cold war ended, problems people faced politically and economically influenced different events in different parts of the world.
This book is considered to be nonfiction; due to that it has all true facts and it explains the cold war and thee outcomes society had experienced.  The story is told in third person because the book includes words such as them, him, her, and it.  Some of the important people in this book are John F Kennedy, Harry Truman, Joseph Stalin and Allen Dulles.  The cold war time period as between 1945-1991 and took place not at a specific place, but for the United States and Soviet Union, on who can dominate/ take over the world. Some important supporting details include how the revolution marked the start of deep tension and conflict between the US and USSR. This “war” had marked an important but tragic time in world history.  The central idea is all about the cold war, why it began and when it ended.  The author created this book to inform the readers about the cold war. It informed readers that because of the Cold War we had many other crises happen after that. From the Cold War we had Korean War and Vietnam War occurs. It explains how other crisis came about.
I enjoyed reading this book because it gave me much knowledge about our past. Before reading this book I did not know a lot about the cold war but it boosted my knowledge and gave me a better understanding behind the Cold War and other crisis that the United States had to deal with. It’s important to know what our history and the people had endured to make our country a better place to live in. It’s important to know that because of the Cold War, we do not live in a Communist country.  I recommend this book to anyone who likes reading factual books and about the past. This book would be great for a person who likes to read about wars.

It is not uncommon to know about World War II and the major transition in world policy that it was instrumental in causing. But not many people are aware of how this change was brought about and how the war was ultimately ended. World War II: 1945: The Final Victories is a book that describes the actions that the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union, collectively known as the Allied Powers took to finally defeat Germany, Italy and later Japan, known as the Axis Powers. Furthermore, it describes certain battles in detail and how they were key in helping the Allies win the war, before detailing the final surrender of Germany and Japan, on V-E Day and V-J day respectively.  Aside from the actual battles, the freeing of prisoners namely ones from German prisoner camps, such as Auschwitz is also covered, paired with descriptions of the horrible conditions in said camps. Later, the book discusses the tumultuous state of the world after the war, and how global peace and aid efforts were initiated by the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as with the creation of the United Nations.
This book is a nonfiction book, with the genre being history specifically, and is told in the third person perspective, from the author's point of view. Within its pages, it mentions people who had some sort of contribution to the war, such as military service, in the case of soldiers and generals. The book, however, focuses mainly on the individuals who headed the countries that were participants of the war, which included Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman; Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union; Winston Churchill, prime minister of the United Kingdom; Adolf Hitler, dictator of Germany, and Heinrich Himmler, his assistant.  These people served as important leaders during the war, as they were essentially the authority in making major decisions that could ensure victory or defeat in battle. For instance, President Harry Truman decided for the atomic bombs to be used in Japan, to elicit some sort of final surrender from them, due to their persistent battling with the Allies. In addition, the actions of Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin are analyzed together, as they collaborated on discussing many issues of the war, including the surrender of Germany. The book spans the entire year of 1945, beginning with the Soviet occupation of Warsaw, Poland, toward the final surrender of the Japanese in December.  The location of the battles discussed transitioned from within Europe, namely Germany and England, to the Pacific Islands, where the Allies and Japan relentlessly fought for three and a half years. In the duration of 1945, other major events also took place. Adolf Hitler committed suicide in late April, seeing that the Germans had no chance of winning the war, with the German surrender following shortly after. The Axis Powers were even more weakened at this point, with the addition of Italy's withdrawal and surrender, but the Japanese continued to battle for their lands in the Pacific and refused to give in peacefully to the United States and the Soviet Union. It was not until the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that the Japanese were forced to. In relevance to these events, the book also includes information on certain military tactics that were used by both sides to subdue each other. These include the development of long-range missiles, firebombing, and suicide flights, most famously associated with the Japanese kamikaze pilots. 1945 was not just a year of war either; the book also discusses the resources that were given to Germany by the United States and the United Kingdom, and how they both put efforts in bringing soldiers back home. Liberation is also a key point; a chapter is dedicated to talking about how thousands of prisoners were captured and mistreated, before being found by the Allied armies and freed from camps such as Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. This book is dedicated to informing the reader of the nature of World War II at its end, essentially, and the transformative changes that it brought to the countries and people that lived through it.
I found this book incredibly fascinating. It is unusual to find me reading historical nonfiction, but this book was captivating and compelling in its descriptions of World War II. The part that I enjoyed most, however, was the photographs that accompanied the writing. The realism of the images allowed me to visualize the experiences that were presented, such as the joy of liberation. In some areas of the book, I lost myself in the vivid accounts and the photographs and forgot that I was reading; in my mind, I was living. Therefore, I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in history, specifically World War II; this book will certainly pique their attention. I would also recommend this book to people who find nonfiction disinteresting since this book is quite clear and intense in its writing style.  In essence, World War II: 1945: The Final Victories was a delight to read, and I am sure that anyone who picks it up will be just as engrossed as I was.

The Great Depression: Experience the 1930's from the Dust Bowl to the New Deal
By: Marcia Amidon Lusted
Illustrated by: Tom Casteel

The book that I read was titled, "13 Hours in Benghazi."  This book was an inside account of what really happened in Benghazi at the time of the attack.  The first few chapters show how the station in Benghazi was situated.  For example, the Annex was situated with 4 buildings, each labeled with a letter from A-D.  Then there was a pool next to Building C, and a gym.  Then they were overrun.  They are hit with mortars and machine gun fire.  I'm not going to go too much in depth with the action and war, but all I'm going to say is that some people die and it is very gruesome and descriptive.
This book was a history book in third person limited point of view.  It's limited because it has the other characters guessing what the others were thinking/feeling.  Some people in the story are Mark "Oz" Geist, Kris "Tanto" Paronto, John "Tig" Tiegen, Tyrone "Rone" Woods, Jack Silva, Dave "D.B." Benson, Glen "Bub" Doherty, Ambassador Christopher Stevens, President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sean Smith, Abdurrahman al-Gannas, Bob, Henry, Alec Henderson, David Ubben, and Scott Wickland.  The setting of the story is in Benghazi, mostly in the Annex and Compound settlement for the Annex Security Team, mostly around September 11th, 2012.  The supporting details of the story are that the members of the Annex Security Team that fought off the Benghazians that were trying to kill them got seriously injured by mortars.  One example from the text is on page 263, where it states, "Still refusing to accept his injuries, Oz tried again to raise his weapon, lifting his left arm and awkwardly flipping up his hand, as though he were playing the child's game of catching a ball on a string in a wooden cup.  Each time he failed."  This shows how some of the people were seriously injured, but still tried to protect their fellow soldiers.  Actually, during that session of failure that Oz had, he didn't feel any pain.  The text also states, "Oz stared at it, in shock, not comprehending that the mortar had torn through the flesh of his left arm, blown away two inches of his radial bone, destroyed part of his radial nerve, and fractured his ulna.  Blood bathed the pulpy mess."  This shows how Oz felt no pain and how he was seriously injured, but didn't realize it.  The central idea of this book is that the Americans in the Benghazi army base were attacked by the Benghazians.  The authors purpose is to tell of what really happened in Benghazi on September 11th, 2011.

I loved this book.  It was very descriptive about what the battlefield was like in Benghazi.  It also vividly described Benghazi and what it was like.  It also described in detail the Annex base and the Compound.  If you like descriptive action books (and I mean DESCRIPTIVE!!!), you would love this book.  This author does a great job with analyzing the scenes and knowing what every person thinks when going back and forth from one perspective to another.  Hence, I really loved the book and people with those same interests should read this book too.

In 1619 A Dutch vessel arrives in Jamestown, Virginia having the first African slaves to land in the British North American Colonies. In 1777 Vermont adopts a constitution that allows emancipation for slaves. In 1793 Congress passed a law called the Fugitive Slave Law which means it gives the slave owner the right to seize a suspected fugitive in any state, but this law is not enforced. In 1833 Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire. In 1837 Women from several states held a convection for anti-slavery for American women. In 1849 Harriet Tubman escapes from Maryland. In the late 1800’s almost 3,200 people worked for the Underground Railroad.
The genre of this book is History. This book is told in third person point of view. Some people that are in this book is William Wells Brown, Frederick Douglass, Henry Brown, Harriet Jacobs, and William and Ellen Craft. Also, conductors Harriet Tubman and Robert and Harriet Purvis. This time period ranges from the 1700’s to the late 1800’s and it takes place in the South that travels to the North with the Underground Railroad. The important events that happen in this story is it talks about the path to making slaves free, and it also talks about the journeys that slaves and other people made, also about some laws that where passed during this time. The central Idea of this book is that it talks about the escapes of the slaves and how slaves where living and being treated, it also talks about the Underground Railroad and how it helped so many slaves.
I highly recommend this book because it gives so much information on the slaves and then Underground Railroad and it just makes you feel like you are in that time period. This book is so realistic and is so informative about everything. I really recommend this book if you like to read about history or about the Underground Railroads or Slaves in general. It’s also very good because it talks about all the important people during the time period and it also shows some pictures in the book to really capture what is going on just in case you were a little lost. So I really liked this book and I definitely recommend that you read this book.

In " Great Military Disasters: the greatest tragedies and failings in warfare history”, it tells of historical events from the battle of Manzikert to facts about Adowa.  There are many stories, pictures, articles, and dates in this book. Reading this book I have learned about many wars, soldiers and about the way things used to be long ago. There were many clashes and disasters as given in the title but it was knowledgeable and offered information of value.
To Touch upon one of the most important sections or parts in my opinion in this book would be the attack on Pearl Harbor. This is so because Marines, such as my Great –grandfather, fought against the Japanese, as they intended to destroy United States army in the Pacific. Also, American commanders were completely unprepared. This section of the book is non-fiction like the rest of the book. All events and facts presented are true. Important roles in this part of the book would be President Franklin D Roosevelt, admiral husband E Kimmel, The Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor, the U.S. soldiers and one of the most significant to know of, Lieutenant William W Outerbridge who spotted the channel leading to Pearl Harbor’s main anchorage which gave the order to open fire. The setting in which this takes place is December 7, 1941 on the Hawaiian naval base at Pearl Harbor. The important plot points of this section would be the start in which the Japanese attacked the U.S, the panic in which Americans had because soldiers were on armed and the US was unmanned, how the U.S. fought with disadvantages, the after math of the war and many other occurrences. The overall theme of this information about the attack on Pearl Harbor would lead to the conclusion that all wars are destructive, tragic and chaotic.
After reading this book, I would recommend this to someone who likes to read about weapons, warships, soldiers, and the most obvious, war. This is because it offered me vivid and an extreme amount of information about wars that I hadn't even known existed. It has taught me a lot about history that is essential to know. Hence, it's distributes a description about an excerpt from this book and my feelings towards it.

The Great Depression: Experience the 1930's from the Dust Bowl to the New Deal was a book describing the rough times of the 1930’s. Which included economic depression, environmental crisis, and a war starting up in Europe. Fortunately, there were good things that happened during the 1930's as well. To many people, the 1930's was one of the hardest and personal decades in our country’s history. People were unemployed, homeless, and had lost their pride. Luckily, the Great Depression time period was a time of technological advances, discoveries, and new inventions.
The book I chose is a history book on the hard times of the 1930's in the United States. My book is written from a secondary source. The book doesn’t mainly focus on one specific person, but on multiple people's suffering during the time. For example, those who lost their jobs and couldn’t get them back because there was no federal government help. This caused people whose livelihood depended on manufacturing and selling goods to go out of business. Also, because people were unemployed meaning they had no money to buy goods being manufactured. This unfortunate event occurred in the United States. The moment the stock market crashed, a chain of events led to many unemployed people. “Life was a party and they thought the party would never end. But when the stock market crashed in October 1929, the party finally came to a screeching halt.” This showed how much of a shock unemployment was to everyone. The central idea of The Great Depression: Experience the 1930's from the Dust Bowl to the New Deal was to explain the difficult times of the roaring 1930's.
One of the reasons I liked this book was because it got the main idea of the great depression through to the reader clearly. If you're a person who likes to read about times of economic growth then I’d certainly recommend this book for you to read.

The book “Women in Space” discusses the long history of sending women into space. Since the first spacecraft sent to space the thought of women going to space was just fiction. This would change when the Soviet Union sent the first woman, Valentina Tereshkova to space. America would have beaten the Soviet Union, but NASA disliked the idea of sending a woman to space. They felt that women would not be able to handle going into space and also, they felt if they sent a woman into space then they would have to send African Americans. Still, women in America fought for this right and finally NASA sent Sally Ride on June,18;1983.  Sally Ride inspired many people by doing this and caused the spark of woman in space. Soon female astronauts were doing the same jobs and experiments as men and many records were created and broken. For example, Mae Jemison became the first African American to go into space. In other countries women were also being dispatched to space. Some astronauts such as Anousheh Ansari from Iran, were even the first people to go to space from their country
The genre of the book is history. The book is written in third person point of view. The people mentioned in the book are mostly astronauts. The most important people are Valentina Tereshkova the first female into space and Sally Ride the first women into space from America. Both these women inspired other females to pursue their dreams, in going to space. The setting takes place in different countries of the world such as Russia, America, China, France and many more. The time period is mostly in the 20th century. One supporting detail is that astronaut, Judith Resnik, died from an explosion from the spacecraft, “The Challenger”. The central idea of the book is to discuss the impact women have had on the history of space. The Author’s Purpose is to motivate readers to following their dreams like the woman did in the book.
One thing that I like about this book is that the lesson that can be learned - is not to give up. Sometimes people do not fulfill their dreams because they are discouraged by people around them or even themselves. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to be motivated through real life events such as woman going into space. These women were brave, motivated, persistent and finally got the opportunity of going to space. Some of these women were discriminated, but were still optimistic that one day they would go to space.  This book proves once again that if you are determined, things can be done.

History is important to know since it explains why things are the way they are today. Information is found by reading a lot, and books on history can easily explain history. One historical book is called “World War One” and is about a dark time in history where the world was split into two alliances. These alliances were called the allied powers and central powers. The entire war changed what humans thought of war forever, and people thought it was “The war to end all wars” because so many gave their lives and it made the countries in each alliance stop spreading territory. This will show information about the book “World War One”
“World War One” is a non-fictional book designed to inform the reader about the history of World War 1. World War 1 lasted from 1914 to 1918, but began only when Hungary-Austria declared war on Serbia, but then Russia helped Serbia. When Hungary-Austria was out-numbered, Germany helped by declaring war on Russia. Fearing that Germans would invade them, the French declared war on Germany, and when Germany did attack, Great Britain stopped them. Soon the Ottomans would assist the Germans and Austria Hungary. When Russia, France, Great Britain, and the U.S pushed Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire out of the war. The Allied forces (France, Russia, Great Britain, and the U.S) had won, but the World had been changed forever. The country leaders were extremely important and made many right decisions that led to the end of the war, but perhaps the true heroes were the millions of soldiers who gave their lives in the war. The overall idea of the book is that things may not turn out the way you wanted them to, because many soldiers thought the war would seem brave and happy, but all they saw in the war was carnage.
The book “World War One” was very interesting and I learned a lot from it. It did what history should to do- teach you about the past and how it determined how things are today. However I do not recommend this book to experts on World War 1, since this book does not teach you about the secrets behind the war. I didn’t know much about the war, so this book was entertaining. Overall, if you enjoy learning about history and you don’t want to know all about World War 1, then “World War One” is a great book for you.

“Founding Brothers” by Joseph J. Ellis is an American history book that tells the fascinating story of a formative era in American life. From the late 1700s to the early 1800s, several men, some of which were important political figures, have greatly influenced the period in which they have lived in. These men include Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, and James Madison.  They are known as the founding fathers and are reexamined in the text as founding brothers.  Throughout the book, the author talks about the numerous relationships each founding father had with one another. These relationships were spread out into 6 events known as Hamilton and Burr’s deadly duel, Washington’s precedent-setting Farewell Address, Adams’ administration and political partnership with his wife, the debate about where to place the capital, Franklin’s attempt to force Congress to confront the issue of slavery and Madison’s attempts to block him, and Jefferson and Adams’ famous correspondence.  The challenges the founding fathers experienced and overcame have helped them set the course of our nation and have helped influence America.
“Founding Brothers” by Joseph J. Ellis is a non-fiction history book that is told in third-person point of view. The important people in this story include John Adams, Abigail Adams, John Quincy Adams, Aaron Burr, James Callender, Benjamin Franklin, and Benjamin Franklin Bache. People who are also mentioned in the story include Alexander Hamilton, James Jackson, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Thomas Scott, Benjamin Rush, Edward Coles, and George Washington.  The book mainly takes place in New York and Philadelphia. Many different locations are included in the story and they include Massachusetts, Virginia, and Washington D.C. The book also takes place throughout the late 1700s and the early 1800s. The supporting details of the plot consist of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams sacrificing their friendship to promote their vision and the patriots’ different views that influenced many events and ideas.  There are also many central ideas that are expressed in the book, but one important one is that honesty is the best policy. The author’s purpose of writing this passage was to inform readers about the importance of the founding fathers and what they did.
I enjoyed reading this book because it informed me about the founding fathers and how important they were to the United States. The book also taught me valuable lessons that I can use in life. These lessons include that before making any decisions, I should think about future generations. I recommend this book to students who are preferably 14 or older. I recommend this book to them because many people don’t know how America came to be and if the students read the book they are informed about the founding fathers and their importance. The students can then inform other people and more people would know about the history of how America came to be. If you like learning about American history, then you will love this book. This book will inform you about the importance of the founding fathers, which are a big part of America.

This book is about the World Trade Center. It is about how New York City was before the World Trade Center, what the design and architecture was, the creativity, September 11th 2001, and the challenges of the future. The main focus was September 11th 2001 since it was, and still is, one of the most historical events to ever take place. It was about how no other event in history became known throughout the world so quickly or dramatically as September 11th. The book had also explained what had happened and why this event was so dramatic and terrible for many people all throughout the world. It told about the many life changing decisions people had to make to protect themselves and their families to make sure they were safe or away from where the destruction had taken place. One of the last things this book explained was how this event would take a toll on people’s lives in the future.
The genre of the book was non-fiction and it was a historical book. This book is told in the third person point of view since the author used words “he” and “she” to describe people. The characters in the book would be the people that were involved in 9/11 such as medical crews, firefighters, and the people who were in the Twin Towers. The story takes place in New York City since that’s where the Twin Towers were located. Some of the supporting details were how it had happened, the people involved, and the pictures because the pictures helped to really show how traumatic and life changing this event in history was. The author’s purpose was to inform people on how this event had really changed people’s lives and how important 9/11 is to many people.
I liked this book because it had really explained how this had impacted people’s lives and gave me a better understanding on how people felt since I wasn’t born when 9/11 happened. I also thought the pictures were excellent. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in history, especially having to do with building architecture, so they could understand more about what had happened.

The book “Beyond their Years” is about 16 Civil War children and how they overcame difficulties in their life at the time. This book is about recognizing Heroes and survivors, who from the ages three to seventeen manage to afford for a new life despite their tragedies that is what Beyond their Years is about.
“Beyond their Years” is a historical nonfiction book. The book is told by third person point of view or the narrator. The children in this book are Jesse Root Grant, Maggie Campbell, Edwin Fitzgerald (Foy), Ella Sheppard, Ransom Powell, Susie Baker King, Elisha Stockwell Jr., John Henry Crowder, Opie Percival Read, Rose Greenhow, Eliza Lord, Annie Augusta Bannister, John Sergeant Wise, Sally LeConte, Albert Butler blocker and William H.S . Burgwyn. The book told stories of people or more specific children. The setting of the book to place in the Civil War era or around mid-1800’s. The main points in this book is when the author state of children survive overcame their tragedies like child labor or be sent to war. The author’s purpose of this book is to show how the real heroes of the Civil War ever wear the children that overcame their difficulties despite the conditions they were in.
I like the book Beyond the Years because it showed how different the life of children was the Civil War and how different it is from the lives of children today headed also shown how it was more difficult for kids back then and how they overcame there are difficulties. I recommend this book to anybody who likes reading about the lives people during the Civil War and the tragedies that they went through.

1776 is written like a biography, but with a twist. Instead of focusing on a person, 1776 focuses on a year. 1776 was a key year in the history of America, and the book reflects that. It tells about the events that happened during that year, from King George’s first recognition of the colonies’ rebellion to Valley Forge. In tells about the British invasion of New York in amazing detail, and introduces many of the key players in the country’s early history. In short, it tells about the first year that America spent as its own country, even if they hadn’t won the Revolutionary War just yet.
This book is a history book, and is set up the way a biography is, except it concentrates on the whole year in the lives of many people, not the whole life of one person. The book is told from the point of view of an outsider, often switching focus to tell the reader what is going on in different areas of the country and even occasionally transferring the action to England for a chapter or two before returning to the colonies in order to give a good, dynamic perspective. The book has so many key people that it would be impossible to mention them all. A key person is George Washington, who features with his many aides such as Joseph Reed, Henry Knox, and Nathaniel Greene. On the other side of the conflict, King George III is introduced in the very first chapter, and occasionally reappears throughout the book. General Howe also appears as commander of the British forces. 1776 also includes some people like Alexander Hamilton or John Adams, who appeared only briefly in the book, but later became hugely influential on early American history. Some of the most important points in the plot are the siege of Boston, the time Washington’s army spent in New York and their retreat from there, and Valley Forge. The book’s first focal point is the siege of Boston. The perspective travels from Washington’s camp outside of Boston to Howe’s camp inside of the city. It then spends several chapters inside of New York and describes the attack on it, which quickly features Alexander Hamilton for the first time. It then describes in much detail the perilous, disorganized, retreat from New York. The next big event of the book is Valley Forge, which is famous as the war’s turning point. The chapters describing it focus on the hardships Americans had to endure and only then move on to the success of crossing the Delaware. The purpose of the book is to inform the reader about America’s history and what the year 1776 meant to our country’s development. The central idea is many of the events that took place during the year 1776 were keys to our nation’s development, and that history would have been quite different if it wasn’t for them.
I liked the book a lot. It did take a while to read, so it would not be a good choice for someone impatient. I liked the way the book was structured, with focus on several key parts of the year, but including brief mentions of other events as well. I also enjoyed the way the book introduced so many historical figures. My favorite part of history is the backstory behind every event, and the people that are involved. This book provides plenty of detail and backstory, so if you like that type of book, this is for you.

"The Hidden History of America at War" is about six wars that America has been through. They are the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the war in Iraq. The book discusses the main points of each war and some of the things that he believes other historians failed to mention about these wars. During the Revolutionary War, he says that America wouldn't have been able to defeat Britain without the help of many other countries such as, France, Spain and the Dutch Republic (Netherlands). The chapter on the Civil War discusses the Union's plan to force the Confederacy to surrender by making them starve. Although the Spanish-American War only lasted 3 months the author also
discusses the after effects like the rebellion in the Philippines. In the chapter called "Berlin Stories" the author discusses how America eventually joined the war because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. In the chapter following that he discusses how many Americans protested
against the war but America ended up winning. Lastly, he describes the war in Iraq and how it began because America wanted to attack Afghanistan after the terrorist attack on 9/11.

This book is historical nonfiction. The author Kenneth C. Davis is telling the story in the third person point of view. There are different people for each chapter of the book, since each chapter takes place in a different time period. In chapter one the important people are George Washington, Colonel Alexander Hamilton, Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens, Marquis de Lafayette, Benedict Arnold, King George III and Henry Clinton. Some of the important people in chapter 2 are Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant and Jefferson Davis. The important people in the third chapter are, William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Important people in chapter four are Theodore Roosevelt, the Soviet Union, Hitler and Harry S. Truman. The fifth chapter's important people are, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon and Ho Chi Minh. Important people in the final chapter are George W. Bush, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden and L. Paul Bremer. The setting also varies by chapter. The book takes place in America, Britain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, many different countries in Europe and Asia. Some of the important parts of the book are the battles that start and end each war. The battles of Lexington and Concord start the Revolutionary war; the war ends in 1781 when the British surrender at Yorktown. The Battle of Fort Sumter starts the Civil War and ends in Virginia in 1865 when the Confederacy surrenders. The first battle of the Spanish American war is Manila Bay in the Philippines; it ends in 1898 when the Spanish surrender in Cuba. Although the U.S helps other countries during World War II American soldiers did not fight until Japan declared war in 1941, it ended when japan surrendered in 1945. The Vietnam War begins with bombing in North Vietnam in 1965, it ended for America in 1973 when President Nixon removed American soldiers from Vietnam bur the war didn't end until 1775. The war in Iraq started when the U.S sent air strikes in 2003, the war officially ended in 2011 when the U.S troops are removed from Iraq. The author's purpose is to inform readers about the major wars that America has been through and to show them as an important part of American history.

I liked this book because it taught me many things I didn’t know and added to some things I already knew. Another thing I liked about the book was that it ended each chapter foreshadowing what would happen in the next chapter. For example, at the end of each
chapter there is a section called "aftermath" and it talks about everything that happened after the war until it reaches the war in the next chapter. I also liked it because it was easier for me to
understand the book since I already had some knowledge about the different wars in America. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history or to anyone who just wants to learn more about America.

In the historical book “Modern World History: The Industrial Revolution” the author gives an overall analysis of the Industrial Revolution. The book contains facts and explanations of multiple aspects during the industrial revolution. Some of those aspects include a quick explanation of times before all the industrial advances, the beginning of the revolution, how the revolution effected the United States and its people, and finally peoples responses to the event. It also contains some photographs to give you visuals of what the author is telling. The book also of views the topic being discussed had.
The book was historical and was told by the author although it wasn't telling of gives multiple examples and point events he has faced but facts. In addition to this the book doesn't have any specific characters but does have names and actions of people who played important roles during the time. The story takes place mostly in the United States but tells about England when explaining the time before the revolution. The supporting details of this book was the facts, explanation, photographs and quotations it provided. The Central Idea of the book was aspects and effects of the Industrial Revolution. Also, the authors purpose was to provide the reader with many views and effects (positive and negative) that happened during and right before the Industrial Revolution. It is also to provide us with the changes it made and a clear understanding of the time.
My recommendation is that the book was all right. It was a good book, and I somewhat enjoyed reading it even though I am not a huge fan of nonfiction. It is a book for experienced readers because it was difficult to understand at times, but after re-reading parts it was clear. After reading it I almost fully understood the Industrial Revolution. It was also great for me being a visual learner and liking to have photographs and other things similar to look at and get an understanding of the text with. I also enjoyed getting the full story of the Revolution. From beginning to end the book gave a ton of insight of the causes and effects of the revolution and others perspectives on it while supporting it with pictures, facts and quotations. But there were downsides to reading it. If you are a reader who needs to be fully interested in a book in order to latch on to the facts this book may or may not be for you. I believe the book will catch the reader’s attention or not have it at all. It had my attention but others may not think so and not be able to absorb all the information it gave. Other than that, it was a factual book that was very informational on the subject of the Industrial Revolution.

For a lot of people, they think of traveling as an escape, or a paradise, and to be able to travel to lands is their idea of fun. You've probably went traveling to another country, or even just another city or state yourself. Well, of all the places you can visit, there's a select few that you can't visit at almost any cost. Ranging from a huge Mausoleum to a statue to the Roman gods, let me tell you about a book, talking about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The history book talks about the original Seven Wonders of the World, going into some in-depth material. Ranging from the earliest known documents about each wonder, to plausible theories on how each wonder was created, author Paul Curtis gives the book an authentic feel that makes it an overall pleasant experience to read. On top of this, the book itself was just interesting to me. Naturally, I already knew about the Pyramids of Giza (I mean, who doesn't?).
However, I was pleasantly surprised reading through the rest of the book. Wonders such as The Lighthouse of Alexandria, The Temple of Artemis, The Colossus of Rhodes, and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus were all new to me. The only other one that I've heard of was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Back to the book and author, the book uses details from real-life documents, and evidence laid out by other people to try to give an enhanced experience to the reader. And finally, Paul Curtis wrote the book with the intent of educating some people about some crazy ancient buildings of the past, and what they were meant for.
Now, with all of this said, I do like the book for what it's trying to do. It's an enjoyable experience with the overall goal of teaching a person about some ancient structures of the world that seem crazy in today's world. And, to be fair, it wasn't perfect by any means. But even still, it was good. That said, though, the book isn't for everyone. I feel that if you're not a big fan of history, it'll bore you pretty quickly. But if you like history, or if you just want to learn about the ancient world, then by all means, pick up this book.

The story “Stolen into Slavery” by Judith and Dennis Fradin, talks about how a man named Solomon Northup was kidnapped into slavery. Solomon was a free man who one day saw 2 guys that needed a ride to Washington D.C they hung out together until they got Solomon’s trust, and one day they kidnapped Solomon and sold him off to a slave owner named James Birch. Then that slave owner sold Solomon and, he was treated nicely by a man named William Ford then, he was in debt and was forced to spilt Solomon and the other slave owner who was terrible and wanted to kill Solomon so Solomon ran away from the bad slave owner. But they were forced to sell Solomon and, he was sold to a man named Edwin Epps, and he was very strict. Many days went on and he made many friends and secretly tried to contact his family and people that he knew in his hometown.
This book is non-fiction and is about a man’s history with slavery. The book was in third person point of view. The people in this story were Solomon, Henry B., Anne, Alonzo, Margaret and Elizabeth Northup, then the slave owners James Birch, William Ford, John Tibaut and the Epps’, and the rest of the lawyers, kidnappers and slaves. This story took place during the slavery time or the mid 1800’s in the United States of America. The story begins with Solomon inside a jail cell almost getting beat to death for saying he’s a free African American, then Solomon gets sold, next he goes on from slave owner to slave owner until he goes to Epps, Solomon starts getting used to his lifestyle he meets new people and they help him contact people, lastly Solomon becomes a freed slave and he goes on trying to convict people that weren’t nice to him. The central idea is to not trust anyone because as Solomon did was trust a couple of guys and he ended up becoming a slave for 11 years. This book was to inform people about slavery and the lifestyle of the people during.
I liked how there are very descriptive and easy words that helped make an image in my mind that also made the story easier to understand. Also, that it was a very interesting book that isn’t too difficult for people to read. I would recommend this book to many people that like history, reading about slavery, people that like to read in general, and people who like to read easy books to understand.

The book explains time and earth. It tries to explain how Earth was originated and its origins. It explains Earths development and how it has been changing or evolving.
This book is a general History book. H.G Wells is telling the book and explaining every thing in it. There are no definitive characters. There is not a definitive person but is a general history of all of Earth and its origins. The time period would be when Earth was formed to the end of the First World War. Some details were of how it showed how Earth was developed and how it has evolved from then. The authors purpose was to educate and inform people of our planets history.
I did not like this book because it was too general. It has more theories than known facts. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy science and want to learn about how Earth was formed and changed from when it formed.

In Fleming’s account of the Romanov dynasty, she begins by describing a grand costume ball that was held on February 12, 1903, that celebrated the 200th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg. Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Empress Alexandra, dressed in elaborate clothing, while the rest of the population was poor and could not afford to do so. The significance of this is that the Romanov’s did not know how the peasants lived. They believed they lived comfortable lives, but that was far from the truth. They struggled to support their families. They lived in huts with little to no furniture or food to eat. Even those that lived or worked in the city worked long hours for poor wages. The working conditions were dangerous and filled with disease.
Because of this disconnect between the Romanov’s and the people of Russia, they were greatly disliked. The author discusses the birth of Nicholas II and his marriage to Princess Alix of Hesse. She talks about the Russian’s form of government and that the tsar was their leader. Nicholas’ father was a cruel leader who was not happy that his son would overrule him. Nicholas did not want to rule, even though his father believed he did. Nicholas originally met his wife when he was sixteen and she was twelve. The couple married on November 26, 1894 after the death of his father. He was scared to become Tsar of Russia. When he soon rose to power, his wife struggled to fit in. Alix gave birth to four daughters but soon she and Nicholas started to worry that they needed a son. They’d seek help from holy men, prayers and mystics. Soon, they were thrilled with the birth of Alexei. However, it became obvious that the little boy had a genetic disorder called hemophilia, and there was no treatment during the time. They kept it a secret.
From 1905 to 1903, the author talks about Nicholas’ horrible reign. An example for this was that he had heard there was a march against the tsar because the peasants revolted against the poor conditions, Nicholas immediately sent soldiers to stop it, which led to the murders of at least 200 people. His actions ultimately lead to the fall of the family’s reign.
Candace Fleming’s work is considered an historical nonfiction piece. It discusses an historical period in time, which follows the Romanov dynasty. She writes in a third person objective view, and documents the Romanov family and the Russian revolution. The setting of this book takes place in the late 19th century - early 20th century in Russia. The central idea of this book was to inform readers about the Romanov family and the Russian revolution. She writes using engaging language to tell about this historical point in time.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in global history. It was a page-turner because it felt like a soap opera! There were many people and events that were shocking and fascinating.

The September 11th Terrorist Attacks

April 15, 1912 disaster struck on the Titanic after it collided into an iceberg. “Titanic: Voices from The Disaster” tells how the tragedy came about and describes the event in detail. It educates the reader through facts, documents, and photos. Not only this, but quotes from actual survivors are included which gives good descriptions of their experiences. Although the book tells of the ones who survived it also, unfortunately, tells of the ones who didn't, making it the misfortune it is known as today. The reader learns about the aftermath as well. The book gives an insight into all the chaos going on before, during, and after the sinking of the ship.
The genre of the book is history because the plot takes place in a setting located in the past. It is told in the third person point of view, someone looking in on the event. It uses pronouns such as they, she, or he. There are no real main people in the book, however many people are mentioned and or give details of personal experiences. Some are Rhoda Abbott, Olaus Jorgensen Abelseth, John Jacob Astor lV, Samuel Hemming, J. Bruce Ismay, Charles Joughin, Hugh Woolner, and many more, in fact too many to be listed. The setting is on the Titanic in 1912. The central idea is that the sinking of the titanic was a huge historical event and tragedy. The author’s purpose was to inform. It gave specific/supporting details such as how women and children filled the life boats before pretty much anyone else, in hopes to save them all which was the main priority before men. Even though the text states the carrying capacity of all the boats was rather small compared to the amount of people so it was apparent that not everyone could be saved. These types of details give more insight in terms of the catastrophe taking place.
I did like this book, it told the events not only through text but also through other things such as photos and documents, and my favorite, personal experiences. Personal experiences really helped to enhance my understanding. I would recommend this book to people who are interested is important historical events, since it focuses on a lot of facts and details, as well as primary sources. I also recommend the book to people who like stories of survival.

“The Women Who Made New York” is an original history book about women, and their interesting stories about the struggle they faced the rise of the Women’s Rights Movement. The book gives an in-depth perspective and lies and limitations of the American Dream. It also shows all of the sexism in a society that denies its female citizens to an opportunity to dream as big as the male citizens were able to. It also showed secondhand insight on the most urgent issues that helped contribute to their rights to this very day.

This book is a nonfiction book about the fight and change in women’s rights, which means the story is told in a third person objective, yet shows all of their views on the fight. The characters are Lady Deborah Moody, Margaret Corbin, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, Emily Warren Roebling, Lillian Wald, and so much more. This story takes place mainly in the 1580’s to the 2000’s all over America. The author’s purpose of writing this book is to inform other people about their struggles that they went through as they were trying to get civil rights for women

This book is certainly interesting; you will feel like you’re in their shoes, feel their struggles and know what it was like when they went through during tough times. If you are into learning about how women earned their rights and finding out what they felt gaining those rights. Along with their, happiness, pain, and victory. I guarantee that you will love this book it's an extraordinary, brilliant, painful book. Unbelievable stories told about the most influential people in history, and this book is something you will find gut wrenching and tear jerking, something you have never read before, for sure. I hope you enjoy this book just as much as I did

The Guns of August is a history of the First World War. In the beginning, the author talks of a funeral for Edward VII the king of the United Kingdom. In between describing the funeral, the author speaks of national rivalries, imperialism, and social Darwinism in the years leading up to the Great War. Then the author brings up the events that led up to or triggered World War I. Gavrillo Princip assassinated the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Then the days leading up to the war are addressed. Russia was struggling to ensure their ally France would join the war. Frances attempts to guarantee of Britain’s involvement. After this the author goes into the battles and tactical planning on the eastern and western fronts. The battles that were front on both frontiers were brutal and very large. There battles fought in the Mediterranean by Navies from many European countries. Goeben a German battle cruiser took refuge from the allied Naval forces in the neutral waters of the Ottoman Empire. This angered Turkey who then joined the war on Germany's side. Also, this led to the blocking of importing and exporting of Russia through the Black sea. Russia invaded east Prussia and Germany reacted to this.

This is a non-fiction book about World War I. The narrator is the author Barbara Tuchman. There are many people included in this book, there are the armies of Britain to Archeduke Franz Ferdinand. This book takes place from 1913 to 1918 and afterward but that is not specified. Germany had an ultimatum against Belgium, The German invasion of Belgium was one of the first battles fought in World War I. The Guns of August was written to show history and back story of World War I, not only to show the causes of it but the effects.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history or is fascinated by it. Textbooks are black and white plain faced and one sided, there was more to history then actions there were thoughts and feelings that came with it. As the author, Barbara Tuchman, once said “He or she must have thought or felt”

This book tells the story of a tragic day in U.S. history and world history. Not only does this book show what happened on that day but the events leading up to it, and the aftermath. The book starts off with a basic introduction of what happened on that day, it tells the reader who was in charge of the attack, Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. The group that devised and executed the plans of terror that day was an Islamic Extremist group known as Al-Qaeda. Next, the book gets more in depth with the cultural differences between the United States and the Middle-East Jihadists. Next, the book discusses the events that took place on that day throughout the United States. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and how it affected the people around them and how it affected the families who lost loved ones that day. The book walks you through the times of the attacks and how the government reacted to the events that were taking place at the time. Finally, the book discusses the aftermath, mostly the war on terror and how the terrorist responded to it.

To start, this book is non-fiction or to be more precise, a historical non-fiction book based on the events of September 11, 2001. This book is told in a third person point of view, or someone who is not within the story. The book mostly talks about people like, President Bush, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and generally speaks about the first responders and the people who worked at the sites of the attacks. The book’s time period is mainly based from 1987 until the War on Terror (2003). The books setting is mainly where the attacks took place, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It is important to understand during this book how many lives were lost that day and how many people it affected. The authors purpose for writing this book was to inform people on what exactly happened that day and why it happened, to help us understand what the world went through and how it affected people, not only in New York but all around the world.

What I like about this book is that it did not directly get into the story of 9/11, the book explained everything that the reader had to know before learning about the events that occurred on that day. I think that this book was easy to read but hard to understand in the sense that you may not fully understand or comprehend what exactly happen that day and how it affected people unless you were affected by it. 9/11 is a very touchy subject so I would not recommend it to people who lost a family member or is just very emotional person. I would recommend this book to anybody who loves to learn about history and or war. All in all, I would say that this is a great book, and it is an important part of our history and needs to be recognized by people all around the world.

Unbroken is a story that takes place during World War II revolving around a renown Olympic runner “Louie” Zamperini. Louie was drafted into WWII where he received training and became part of a B-29 Crew. However, during battle when the plane he and his crew were on gets shot down and starts spiraling into the ocean, Louie and two of his crew mates; Phil and Mac, are stranded at sea. After 47 days at sea; the longest anyone during that time had survived, with only Phil and Louie left they are spotted by a Japanese boat and are captured. Half-starved and in very poor shape Louie goes through many things during World War II that others would rather die than experience.
Unbroken is a Historical nonfiction book however, it still has significant parts of biographies as it revolves around a main person and the neighboring people they are familiar with. The book is written in a third-person point of view almost as if someone was following Louie around and telling the story. The major people are Louie himself, Louie’s family, Phil, Mac, The Bird, Cynthia, William Harris, The Quack, and Kawamura. Most of the people listed made a big impact in Louie’s journey or helped Louie and/or gave him hope in troubled times. The other people made his journey even harder including The Bird and The Quack. The setting or settings in Unbroken are World War II, the Pacific, and Japan. The author’s purpose in this book is to Inform as it is based on a true story and has true facts.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys biographies or nonfiction. The book may be slow paced at the beginning but near the middle it starts to reel you in like a fish on a line. I also recommend this book to readers who enjoy occasional angst or sadness in the story. Unbroken is a book that will leave the reader feeling like they are there in the story watching and undergoing all Louie experiences.

On March 25th 1911, the Triangle Shirt Waist Company went up in flames. Down below the on the street, people started to notice that smoke was billowing from the 8th floor. The Engine Company 72 arrived a few blocks away from the fire, and had trouble maneuvering their hose. The door leading to the staircase was very crowded, because in this building, the doors opened in instead of out. The elevators that were installed in the building could only hold about 10 people. Girls were now jumping, trying to grab onto a ladder or something else that was sturdy, but they all missed, diving to their deaths. To this day, no one is really sure how the fire started; however, the fire resulted in labor laws that would help protect factory workers. The fire caused changes in construction, such as having doors open outwards and to have sprinkler systems installed.
“The Fire That Changed America” is a Nonfiction History book and is written is 3rd person because the narrator is telling the story using words such as “they and him.” Thomas C.T. Crain is an important person in the story, because he is “living proof that not all highborn citizens were contemptuous of the Democratic machine.” Another person that is important is Leon Stein because he is the person in the story that is giving information to the reader about the fire, since he was a bystander during this event. This historical fire takes place in lower Manhattan in the 1900’s. The people that could not escape the building because of its conditions are supporting details, because if the building had better conditions, more people would have been able to survive this fire. David Von Drehle wrote this book to inform readers on an event that took place in history. Many people were not born in this period of time and would want to know more about this topic.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy edge of the seat books. This book kept me on the edge of my seat because I wanted to know how the workers got out and how their lives were after the fire happened. People who also take pleasure in learning about events that happened in history will like this book because this fire has changed the way that people live and work today.

“Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” by James L. Swanson is the fast-paced thriller that tells the story of the conspiring and execution of the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln on April 15, 1865. The story goes into detail on how Lincoln’s killer attempted to overthrow the United States by having him and his co-conspirators kill multiple important government figures in one night. It goes on to show the motives for the crime and the attempt to escape persecution during a 12-day manhunt for Lincoln’s killer. This very well crafted text jumps from multiple scenes to give an in depth tightly knit understanding of the text.
The book “Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” is a nonfiction book that describes the manhunt of Lincolns assassin. The story is told by the narrator in a third person view, he describes the scenes as an outsider looking in as the events unfold. There were many people involved in the assassination and the tracking of Lincolns killer, from the killer himself, John Wilkes Booth, to Abraham Lincoln and his family as well as entire array of government officials. The events mostly take place during the early post-Civil War era, the location of these events take place mainly in Washington D.C., but as the assassins make their escape the events begin to unfold in Maryland and Virginia. The effect the assassination had swept across the entire nation. A part of the text and one of my favorite quotes is when the text states “The comic line spoken by Harry Hawk, ‘You sockdologizing old mantrap,’ was followed by an explosion of laughter from the audience. The black powder charge exploded and spit the bullet toward Lincoln’s head.” This line effectively shows the initiation of the twelve-day man hunt for John Wilkes Booth and the events that unfold afterward. I think the authors purpose for writing the story was to show John Wilkes Booth didn’t get what he wanted, yes, he killed Lincoln but his plan ended in failure, this failure is a symbol of how the United States will forever live on no matter what obstacles are thrown in its path.
What I like about this book is the amount of detail the author goes into to tell the various accounts of the assassination and manhunt. Another thing I like about the book is that it depicts various pictures of the people, scenes and items to help the reader visualize what was happening. I would recommend this book to history fanatics who would enjoy a page turning thriller that makes the reader feel like they’re really there.

Many people know about World War II and that people were placed in prison camps. However, what some people may know are the conditions in the prison camps and who was in the camps. To start off, the people in the camps were soldiers, more specifically American and Filipino troops. The Americans and Filipinos fought together in the war against Japan in the Philippines, Filipino soldiers were promised citizenship in the Unites States because of assisting in war. The war continued with Filipino troops fighting because they wanted citizenship in the United States, however what they did not know was that this may not come true. The allied forces began to lose, they had very little food and were starving and were dying because of lack of supplies, once they were in a position so bad, that Major General Edward King displayed a white flag of truce and asked to meet with Japanese command. When they met Major General Edward King negotiated a way to surrender, finally they came upon the decision that King give up his sword but gave his pistol instead. He then said make sure you treat them well, them meaning the soldiers, the Japanese Major general replied “we are not barbarians.” The Japanese troops were overwhelmed by the number of enemy forces combined, however they were not in condition to fight. The troops were now prisoners of the Japanese. The march began now to a prison camp many miles away. It is named the Bataan Death March because the march was through the city of Bataan in the Philippines and death march because many people died in the march, the conditions were horrible. There were no restrooms and sleeping places, hence the soldiers fouled and spoiled themselves and slept on rough dirt and wood floors. Anyone not capable of marching would be left to die in the blazing sun. If someone was trying to escape and got caught, they would hang them by their thumbs for days, another punishment was sitting the blistering hot dirt under the sun without a hat or proper clothing, sometimes they would do this test right in front of fresh, cool water, anyone who drank would be shot dead or poked by the bayonet multiple times in different places and left in pain. When the march was over, the prison camps were turned into prisons and the American and Filipino troops were held there. Another general of the same American and Filipino forces surrendered as well and they were moved to Cabanatuan. In 1943 the U.S. raided the Japanese and they couldn’t keep up.
The genre of the book is nonfiction, more specifically History, this is so because it happened in the past. The point of view is third person point of view, there were some survivors but they didn’t write about this, the narrator is the author who uses world like they and them. The people in this book are the American, Filipino, and Japanese soldiers, there are also army generals and its basically all the armies of various countries. Majority of this book takes place in the Pacific, in different places like Bataan, Cabanatuan, and other countries. Some interesting details are that there were 40,000 Japanese troops and a combined amount of 75,000 American and Filipino troops, also that when the industrial revolution occurred the U.S. began to win because they could produce more material faster and in more quantity than their enemy counterpart could keep up with, this lead to a win, lastly Major General Edward King didn’t have his sword even though the Japanese Commander wanted that, however King somehow convinced him to have his pistol instead. The central idea is that the prison camps were horrible places and the author describes all of World War II. The authors purpose is to inform people about World War II and what the conditions were like in various times of the war.
Broadly, I loved reading this book. There were pictures to go along with what the writer was writing and that helped a lot to imagine what times were like during the war. Another thing I liked about the book were the descriptive captions to go along with the pictures. Some pictures were very shocking, like a picture of the survivors right after getting freedom. At first glance I thought they were extremely sick and didn’t eat food and it turned out to be true, that’s how easy it was to identify the poor health of the soldiers. I would recommend this book to a person who likes to read interesting things and likes to be surprised. There were many things that surprised me. Overall, I would recommend this book to everyone. There is a mix of information in a very simple format so you can understand. So, go get a copy of this book and join the roller coaster of experience and share your thoughts!

The book title basically tells what the book is about. The book is about how African- Americans were recruited and how people reacted to this happening for the first time. It also talks about the how they faced racial prejudices and stereotyping. It talks about how life was before and after recruiting mostly how it impacted Germans.
The genre of this book is nonfiction, it talks about real events that happened in the real world. This book is told in third person (someone from outside the story). The setting takes place in French, Britain, Germany and the United States. The people that are included in the text, not all of them are not named, they are groups if people which includes: Black soldiers (African American soldiers), Major Jean Baptiste, Charles Mangin, the French president, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, etc. (there are a lot of primary and secondary characters in this book). The authors purpose of writing this book is to inform the reader of how/what happened during the 1914-1922 and how black soldiers were treated. The central idea is how African soldiers were recruited in the first World European War and how people reacted to it/it impacted their lives. The text states "The First World War had also led to significant changes in the position of other group that had been discriminated against until then. Women made a powerful entrance into public life. As so often with emancipating groups, they were not necessarily more sensitive to discriminating prejudices toward third parties." It also states "The colonial history and the campaign against the black shame contributed in their way to the shaping of a white German consciousness based on respectability, on Right, Justice and Morality. "This shows how the recruiting of African soldier impacted the people
I didn't like this book. The reason why is because this isn't my type of book, also because I don't like learning about the past. I know that those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it but history to me (except certain topics) is kind of scary. Also, I don't like this book because it had a lot of big words in it and when I usually don't know what a word means and how to pronounce it, I take the word out the sentence. If the sentence is still confusing, I would find the definition of the word. Lastly, I didn't like this book because I don't like reading long book, when a book is long I usually spread out the reading (ex. 10 pages per day), which makes me procrastinate and also I might get confused if I skip a day. I would recommend this book to people who like reading about history.

The book retells American history and focuses on the stories that do not make it into many popular news articles. For example, the author had started with Christopher Columbus and told the side that most people don't see, which consists of racist agendas and the fight to replace a broken political system. The author had explained major events in history and told information that people did not know.
A People's History of the United States is a non-fiction book where the author interprets a different way of  viewing the history of the United States. The author, Howard Zinn, is telling the story in his own words. Christopher Columbus, Native Americans, African Americans and Robber Barons are important to the story that Zinn tells. The story takes place in 1980 where Howard Zinn is reflecting on everything that has happened in American history since 1492 throughout present day. Zinn talks about the Civil War, the Vietnam War, and the anti-war movement to show that the general public has changed their views on things over time. Zinn's purpose was to change how people think about American history after seeing the other side / the less publicized stories.
I liked the book because it changed how I felt about many events that occurred in history, after learning about the things that have happened that was kept from the public, and I liked that because it was interesting to learn something new. I would recommend the book to people who are interested in American's history, especially if they want to see the truth / the background of the story.

This intriguing and amazing book is about World War II. The book talks about how America has nearly ended the war but, there was still an issue of Japan. It specifically talks about the bombings of Japan and the final year of the war. The book goes into to detail on how Harry Truman ordered the bombings of Japan and how the Manhattan Project was an atomic bomb that was used in Japan.

This book is an important history book because it talks about World War II and how America won the war. The author gives the readers an insight to the tough decisions that were made and how desperate soldiers would do anything to win this war. This war is in the 1940’s and this was a very important time because FDR and just died and now Harry Truman had a difficult decision to make. This book not only talks about Harry Truman it also talks about General Douglas MacArthur and how he helped fight on in the Philippines. One very important detail was when Harry Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb.

I enjoyed this book very much because it was interesting to see and encounter how Harry Truman faced a difficult decision. Also, if didn’t read this book I wouldn’t know how the United States fought for the good of this country.

Imagine a nightmare where you and seven other people landed a plane in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. You don't have any food or drinkable water and all eight of you have to squeeze yourselves onto three diminutive rafts. This nightmare was someone else's reality. Lost in the Pacific by Tod Olson explained the circumstances a crew faced once they were forced to make an unexpected landing in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This was due to the pilot’s inability to locate their refueling spot for the plane. The eight men aboard the three rafts faced deadly threats such as nearby sharks, dehydration, too much sunlight exposure, and starvation trying to survive in these waters.

Lost in the Pacific is a nonfiction book that tells about the crashing of a B-17 that was supposed to discreetly transport an astonishing war hero into a battlefield during World War II. This event that occurred in 1942 is told by the author himself, Tod Olson. The eight people that were aboard this plane when it crashed were Colonel Eddie Rickenbacker, Colonel Hans Adamson, Lieutenant John Deangelis, Sergeant James Reynolds, Captain Bill Cherry, Lieutenant Jim Whittaker, Private Johnny Bartek and Sergeant Alex Kaczmarczyk. Rickenbacker was said to be the best living war hero and he was the reason why they were all on the plane. The author wrote this book to inform readers about experiences these people faced when they were lost at sea.

I found this book to be extremely fascinating and would recommend it to anyone because of the fact that the author was able to make me feel the terror and pain that people in the book felt. For example, I was able to feel the pain and sympathize for the crew members once they had lost Sergeant Alex Kaczmarczyk 13 days after the crash, due to exposure. At another point in time, sharks surrounded the rafts and because of the descriptive detail in which the author wrote this book, I was able to understand the terror that they had felt. All in all, this book was extremely interesting and thrilling from the moment the crew hit the water because as a reader, I was able to understand how much each person longed for drinkable water, food and shelter. Due to this connection that the author was able to achieve between the book and I, I would recommend this book for anyone and everyone.

Have you ever heard of what happened in the night of February 18, 1952? This was the night that had one of the worst storms New England had ever seen. This was such a tragic time because two oil tankers had torn in half, off the coast of Cape Cod. With thirty stranded sailors, a band of Coast Guards must rush to the rescue. Overcoming hurdles and surviving through their rescue mission, witness the tale of true courage, in The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias. However, even if they do make it to the site of the wrecked Pendleton and Fort Mercer, how are they supposed to bring thirty men back to safety, on a life boat, before the storm gets even worst?
The book, The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias, is a historical book. With events that actually occurred, the book provides many characters who contribute to the plot. In other words, there were many important characters. The main ones however were the four rescued sailors. The first of these four Coast Guards was Bernie. Bernie was then given a command by the Chatham Station to take three volunteers along with him for the suicidal mission. These were Richard, Fitz and Ervin. However, these weren’t the only characters. There were also Captain John J. Fitzgerald who actually confirmed the death of seven men who had drown with the bow, of the Pendleton ship. In addition, there was Bernie’s girlfriend, and who were about to get engaged, Miriam Penttinen. Also, there was Bernie’s friend Mel Gouthro who would have volunteered but wasn’t allowed because he was ill. This story filled with all of these unique characters takes place in New England, mainly off the coast of Cape Cod. Some important plot points, to start off with are when Bernie is looking for volunteers. This would vary whether the group had a chance. Another important plot point was when the two oil tankers actually get ripped in half by the immense tidal waves. A lot of destruction happened, when they split. Finally, on more important event was when the daring group of Coast Guards come across the Chatham Bar, and must get passed it. This was so important because since it was so dangerous, the crew had to logically think it through.

The daring and thrilling historical book, The Finest Hours by Michael J. Tougias, is probably a favorite in my history of reading. What I favored most about this particular book was how large the author makes the obstacles, the rescuers must overcome, making it seem almost impossible. Thus, the mission is mostly referred to as a suicidal mission. This really adds on to the suspense, action, and showing of courage and determination; one of my favorite characteristics of books. I would recommend this book for anyone who is tired of usually reading boring and too informational books, here is something that will wake you up. If you are a reader who is into action, suspense, and true determination you will love this book.

The Titanic, a ship so big and beautiful takes a tragic turn into something unbelievable. On May 31, 1911, the Titanic launched for its first adventure filled with a total of about 2,220 people on it. These people varied from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class on all 9 decks on the ship. As we call it the Titanic the ship actually had its own name, its (her) name was RMS Titanic. She started construction on March of 1909 and took about 2 years to finish. At the time the Titanic was the world’s biggest passenger ship and measured 269 meters, weighing to about 52,310 tons. The ship was heading to New York when it hit a glacier which cased water to seep inside the ship. This caused the ship to gain weight and eventually sink. It was in the water for a total of about one year and 2 months before it hit the glacier and killed more than 1,500 people. Many people on that ship, including crew and captain, died either sinking with the boat or freeing to death in the water that was estimated to be 28 degrees Fahrenheit.

This book is an historic book because it talks about the Titanic itself and the book is told as a story about what happened that day. The people in this book were the captain Edward John Smith, the passengers, and the crew members. The setting in the story is in the ship and the important supporting details were when the ship was being build and when it hit a glacier and was about to sink. This is because when both of these events took place it was a starting and an end point to the ship and most people know the Titanic as a ship that hit a glacier and that sunk because of it. The central idea of the book was that the Titanic was a moment in history that will always be remembered and we will never forget how many lives we lost on that day.

What I liked about this book was that I got to learn more about what actually happened on the day this event in history occurred and learn about how many people on that ship died because the ship hit a glacier. I think it’s important to know what happened/happens in history before and after you are born because it gives you an idea of how life was back then and how much it has changed to the present day we live in today. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about history, the Titanic in general, and learn more about the Titanic because this book isn't that long so you could just read it for your enjoyment but also learn something from it.

The north and the south of the U.S had trouble deciding if slavery should continue or not. They decided this on war, if the north wins, slavery will be abolished. But if the south wins, slavery will continue for them and they get to be independent from the north. In the progression, there was an election for who gets to be president. That is where Abraham Lincoln came as president. With this responsibility, Lincoln had to control the how the war is going to be control. Lincoln had to go over three different generals for the army for the north. Lincoln was put in a bad position because the war had over 600,000 deaths and Lincoln was still in trouble have having his position as president to be thrown off and have someone else to be president.
The genre of the book is history. The book is being told from third person point of view. the characters in the book include Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, John Brown, Fredrick Douglas, Ulysses S. Grant, William Sherman, Joseph Hooker, Robert E. Lee, and of course citizens of the U.S., including Slaves. The war took place in the U.S most of the states. The time period of the war was from 1860 to 1865.  There were some important plots of the story. One was when Lincoln was elected president. Another one was when John Brown went to the south area with an army and started to murder civilians in the south. Since the murder of the south civilians the south started to go after Brown and other northern civilians. With that both sides have gone serious and caused the deaths of many males in the army. Thus, General Grant has led the north to victory and all slaves were free. The theme of the story is that to make something to be true you must make several sacrifices.
What I liked about the book is that it was very descriptive about the war. There were no questions that were left not answered. I would recommend the book to people that are having trouble understanding the Civil War. I say that because that book has extraordinary amount of details based on the war. Plus, it also gives details that usual textbooks don't give information about. Thus, the reason you should trust this author with this extra information is because he is one of the authors that writes the social study text books.

On April 15, 1912, the magnificent liner the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg beneath the icy North Atlantic seas. Nobody expected this huge, fancy ship to crash. In this book, Titanic: A Sibert Honor Book, Voices from The Disaster, it will describe the feelings of the passengers, and will describe the inside of the ship. There's Violet Jessop, a young stewardess, Archibald Gracie, a well-to-do gentleman, and Charlotte Collyer, a young mother on her way to start a new life, and others. This book will deepen your understanding on the Titanic.
In this nonfiction, historical book, told by Deborah Hopkinson, in the third point of view, it describes the tragedy, the Titanic, including the description, and the feelings of the passengers on the ship. One character in the book was a twenty-four-year-old, lady named Violet Jessop, who was a stewardess on the ship. Violet knew, from experience, that on most ships that stewards lived in cramped quarters, with little comfort or privacy. She thought that it would be a foul place, infested with bugs. However, the Titanic was not like that. The stewards and stewardesses were delighted with clean and new accommodations on the Titanic. This made the crew very happy. Inside the Titanic was clean. Another character was Charlotte Collyer, who was on the ship with her husband Harvey Collyer, and her eight-year-old daughter, coming to America. Her family was going to begin a new life, and they thought what would be the best way to begin a new life than to be sailing on the new incredible Titanic. Charlotte was delighted. She thought the Titanic was wonderful, and was far more splendid and huge than she had ever dreamed of. Charlotte says that she wasn't worried about safety. She was sure that even the worst storm couldn't hurt a ship that big. Another character was Archibald Gracie, a seasoned transatlantic traveler. An amateur military historian and writer, Colonel Gracie hailed from a wealthy New York family. But even he couldn't help being impressed by the Titanic. He says that he enjoyed himself as if he were in a summer palace on the seashore, surrounded with every comfort. There was nothing to indicate or suggest that they were on the stormy Atlantic. The time period that this story takes place in is in the 1900s. This book takes place inside the Titanic. Overall there were 1,317 passengers on the board the Titanic. 324 in first class, 284 in second class and 709 in third class. Of these, 522 were woman and children. The ship was certainly designed to please. Offering richly decorated public rooms, music concerts, shuffleboard, chess, dominos, card games, cricket and deck tennis. Some first-class passengers stayed in two-bedroom suites with private bathrooms. Others enjoyed staterooms with an extra sitting room, beautiful furniture, wood-paneled walls, and brass or mahogany beds with electric reading lights. The central idea and authors purpose is to inform you on the tragedy the Titanic. There is details describing how the passengers felt, and what being on the ship was like. There is also details about the setting, and how the disaster happened.
I would recommend this book. I liked how the author included details about the passengers on the ship, to help understand what it would feel like to be on the ship. I also enjoyed how the author included pictures to help visualize the inside of the ship. If you like historical non-fiction books, then you would love this book. You will love this informative, detailed book on the Titanic.

The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II

The Rape of Nanking is the heart-wrenching description of the Nanking Massacre, a terrifying atrocity caused by the Imperial Japanese Army from 1937-1938. Iris Chang grabbed the attention of thousands with captivating recollections of the massacre and called out the Japanese government on their refusal to address their mistakes. Chang's bestseller exposed the brutality of the Nanking Massacre to the Western world and demanded an apology from the Japanese government, bringing forth justice for the thousands of innocent civilians harmed and killed by the Imperial Japanese Army.
In The Rape of Nanking, a historical book written by Iris Chang, she described the massacre in Nanking from the perspectives of the Chinese civilians, Japanese soldiers, and Westerners providing shelter and safety for the Chinese such as John Rabe and Minnie Vautrin. This technique provided a more detailed idea of the massacre and prevented bias from leaking into Chang's nonfiction piece. Iris also wrote about American and European reactions to the massacre after World War II and the reasons why people remain oblivious to the fact that the Nanking Massacre occurred. Iris Chang even included, in gruesome detail, descriptions of the torture, murders, and other atrocities committed by the Japanese army during the massacre. Throughout the book, Chang made it clear that her reason for writing The Rape of Nanking was to inform the Western world of its existence and remind the Japanese of their mistakes in the past.
I don't usually enjoy any sort of nonfiction and The Rape of Nanking was no exception. It was well-written, but I'm just not a fan of history. I would still recommend this book to any fans of nonfiction and history books, provided they can handle the graphic descriptions of murder, torture, and the like. I'm used to things like that after watching more than a year's worth of horror movies, but someone innocent and sensitive, like Anna F., might not be able to handle a book like this. Just make sure you have something to hug close by while reading The Rape of Nanking.
